Is Big Brother Naija a Goldmine or a Moral decay?

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

It can therefore be said that Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) quickly became the rave of the moment in Nigeria. It has become a perfect symbol of our culture which many people discuss regarding its influence. Is it a place where the youth in Nigeria with talents can prove their worth and earn good incomes? Or is it an environment that encourages poor and indecent behaviour in addition to being an area of entertainment that misleads the Nigerian culture and norms?

On one hand, it can be argued that BBNaija has indeed employed many young people. It has given a break to many aspiring entertainers, fashion designers, actors and entrepreneurs. The show has also turned out to be among the major sources of revenue for the Nigerian economy through sales of advertisersā€™ billboards, sponsors, and sales of items. Furthermore, it has allowed the people of Nigeria to interact and hence feel that they have something in common.

However, they said the same about BBNaija and itā€™s equally as valid as the positives people were saying about Big Brother Africa. Most of the criticisms have included labels of the show as a sexually provocative, materialist, and one that is unfavourable to tradition. Prominent features such as the constant portrayal of physical affection and obsessed focus on lavish living are worth questioning in terms of the kind of virtues being nurtured among young people. Also, the focus on tasks as a means of obtaining fame and money distorts the perspective of young audiences and certainly does not foster the development of healthy values.

Thus, it will suffice to note that Big Brother Naija is a mirror of society but is not responsible for creating society. The show only escalates social problems to the next level and the families portrayed in the series are not different. Thus, it remains with us as viewers to be wise and to understand that whatever we are watching has been processed. We ought to engage in healthy practices of realizing the best from this platform, at the same time, ensure, we do not entertain the vices the platform brings.

Do you have anything to discuss concerning BBNaija? Should we give credit to social media for creating positivity within society or the other way around, is it a danger to society?
