Early childhood education pivotal to formidable future – Remi Tinubu

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has emphasised the critical importance of early childhood education as a powerful tool for shaping the future of both individuals and the nation.

According to her, focusing on these formative years can significantly influence a child’s life trajectory and contribute to a stronger, more prosperous society.

In a statement released by her Senior Special Assistant on Media, Busola Kukoyi, Mrs Tinubu highlighted that early childhood is a pivotal period that determines lifelong outcomes.

She made these remarks during a high-level forum of women leaders in Bujumbura, themed ‘Investing in Early Childhood to Build Human Capital Throughout Life.’

Mrs Tinubu, along with other First Ladies in attendance, stressed the vital role women play in nurturing children during these early stages, noting that this period is a key factor in determining a child’s future development and success.

“Over the years, research has shown that the early years, particularly from birth to age eight, are crucial for a child’s cognitive, physical, and emotional growth. These years lay the foundation for their future, impacting not just education but also their long-term social, economic, and emotional well-being. Early childhood development also forms the cornerstone of sustainable development and national prosperity.

“As First Ladies, we hold a unique position of influence, and with that comes the responsibility to shape policies that impact generations. I strongly believe that early childhood development should be at the top of our agenda due to its transformative impact on individuals and society.

“As women leaders and mothers of the nation, we have the ability to advocate for, influence, and lead social change, particularly for women and children.

“In my opinion, the first step for early years is to garner more support to complement the Government’s efforts to effectively implement early childhood education policies. As Nigeria’s first Lady and a lifelong teacher, I recognise that Early childhood development is one of the most critical areas where we can make a lasting difference”.

In his opening remarks at the forum, Évariste Ndayishimiye, the President of the Republic of Burundi, stressed the crucial role of the family in determining children’s life outcomes and urged both parents to take this responsibility more seriously.

“We cannot achieve personal or collective development without embracing our culture. Our cultural heritage provides all the resources we need for success. A strong relationship between couples is essential for raising well-adjusted children,” he stated.

Other speakers at the forum, including the First Ladies of Slovenia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Gambia, and Turkey, as well as representatives from the UN and UNICEF, highlighted the importance of school feeding programs as a way to encourage early school attendance, particularly in Africa.

They also discussed the need to promote peace in the region, asserting that early childhood education is vital for building a better future.
