Remi Tinubu Flayed for Calling Woman Thug

Remi Tinubu

On Wednesday, May 26, Senator Remi Tinubu, engaged in a verbal attack on a woman during the public hearing of a constitutional review at the Marriot Hotel, Lagos.

In a widely circulated video, the Senator is heard calling the woman a thug. The description did not go down well with the abused woman, and she countered by responding, ‘’I am not a thug’’.

Tinubu represents Lagos Central and also leads the Senate Committee on Review of the 1999 Constitution in the South-West. The Cable reports that Remi was involved in a heated exchange with some people attending the hearing.

According to reports, residents queued to register before entry to the venue. Meanwhile, the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu arrived and went in through the back door. Following his arrival, the front door shut and registration closed. However, those who hadn’t yet registered decried this action and protested on the queue.

Commotion ensued when some residents followed lawmakers who jumped the queue and entered the venue. Tinubu reportedly showed up at the backdoor to give the lawmakers free passage. This necessitated the woman whom the lawmaker called a thug to speak up. The woman complained about the partiality at the venue and how she was being denied entry. Hence, she voiced her displeasure.

Consequently, Tinubu admonished the woman for speaking too loud and dubbed her a thug. Some people at the scene of the incident demanded an apology from Tinubu but she vehemently refused. In her words, “I will not apologise for what I said. I saw it and I said it.”

Knocks for Remi Tinubu

The attitude of Tinubu has been condemned by some on social media. This is not the first time that the lawmaker would be found wanting of making uncouth statements to people.

While speaking with The Punch, human rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, flayed the actions of Tinubu. She said, ‘’It’s so much disgusting arrogance from a senator who is an elected official to speak to citizens in that manner. And this is not the first time Remi Tinubu is doing this. She looks down on people. I’m sure she is used to people who come to her, rolling on the floor and she thinks everybody will bow before her family. That is why she keeps on carrying this arrogance around.’’

Twitter user, Morris Monye, commented, ‘’I wonder when our future First Lady, Remi Tinubu will be in the news for the right reasons. No class whatsoever.’’

@DrOlufunmilayo tweeted, ‘’With Patience Jonathan, you have a woman who actually cared. With Aisha Buhari, you have a woman who spoke against her own husband’s madness. With Remi Tinubu, you will have a First Lady who harass and tyrannize anyone who speaks against the government. May this disaster not hit Nigeria.’’

The firm stance of the abused woman has been applauded by many. It is an indication that the people are no longer willing to be intimidated by those they have elected into public offices.

Leaders have been advised to be more polite and compassionate to the grievances of the people. This will prevent further confrontation from the masses in the future.
