Between history and political science: Which course has the edge in Nigeria?

When it comes to choosing between history and political science, the decision often depends on what you want to achieve with your career. While both fields are important for understanding human societies, I believe that political science holds more promise, especially in a country like Nigeria. Here’s why political science, in my opinion, offers more practical benefits and better job prospects.

The relevance of both history and political science

History, by its nature, is a subject that looks back in time. It helps us understand where we come from, the mistakes and triumphs of past societies, and how human civilizations have evolved. It’s a field that emphasizes research, critical thinking, and a deep understanding of cultural and societal shifts. These are valuable skills, but the opportunities to apply them in the real world, particularly in Nigeria, are quite limited.

Political science, on the other hand, deals with present-day realities. It’s about power—how it’s distributed, how governments function, how policies are made, and how international relations shape our world.

In Nigeria, a country marked by political instability and economic challenges, political science offers the tools to engage with these issues in a meaningful way. Political scientists are trained to analyze policies, advise on governance, and understand the workings of local and global politics. These are highly relevant skills in today’s world.

Skills that matter in the Nigerian job market

One of the key reasons I lean toward political science is the versatility of the skills it provides. Political science graduates are equipped with analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills that are applicable across multiple sectors. Whether you want to work in government, NGOs, international organizations, or even in the private sector, understanding politics and policies is an asset.

In Nigeria, where politics often influences everything from business to development, having a background in political science can open many doors. Graduates can find work in government agencies, political advisory roles, embassies, think tanks, or advocacy organizations. These jobs are not only varied but also impactful, allowing individuals to influence change at different levels of society.

History graduates, on the other hand, often find themselves limited to a few career paths. Many end up in academia, teaching or conducting research, or in cultural institutions like museums. While these are important roles, they are fewer in number, and the financial rewards are often lower. In a country where the education and cultural sectors are underfunded, it can be difficult for history graduates to find well-paying, stable jobs.

Political science doesn’t just offer a broader range of jobs; it also provides the potential for better-paying roles. In Nigeria, politics is deeply intertwined with many industries, from oil and gas to telecommunications. As a political scientist, you can work as a policy advisor, political analyst, or even a campaign strategist. These positions are not only well-paid but can also lead to significant influence in society.

Moreover, the growing NGO sector in Nigeria is another area where political science graduates thrive. These organizations work on governance, human rights, and development issues, and they need experts who understand the political landscape. The salaries in this sector tend to be competitive, especially for those working with international NGOs or donor-funded projects.

While history graduates can contribute to society by preserving and interpreting the past, their career options are more limited. Historians may struggle to find well-paying jobs outside of academic or cultural institutions. The opportunities to grow into leadership or advisory positions are less frequent compared to the dynamic and ever-evolving world of political science.

Why I support political science

For me, political science is the better choice because it’s grounded in current realities and offers more practical applications. In a country like Nigeria, where political and economic issues are constantly at the forefront, understanding the workings of power and governance is crucial.

Political science graduates have the knowledge and skills to engage with these challenges, whether through public service, policy advising, or working with organizations that aim to improve governance.

While history is undoubtedly valuable for understanding the roots of these issues, political science equips you to act on them. It’s a field that prepares you for leadership, influence, and real-world impact, which are all necessary if you want to be a part of shaping Nigeria’s future.
