2027 Elections: INEC partners IRI, intensifies preparations

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reaffirmed its commitment to organising a free, fair, credible, and transparent general election in 2027.

The pledge was renewed as the Commission received a delegation from the International Republican Institute (IRI) for a Pre-Election Assessment Mission (PEAM) at its headquarters in Abuja.

The visiting delegation, led by IRI President Dan Twining, is on a 10-day evaluation tour in Nigeria running from August 11 to 21, 2026.

The mission aims to assess INEC’s operational readiness for the upcoming 2027 national polls and identify areas where global partnerships and technical assistance can further strengthen the country’s electoral frameworks.

Speaking during an interactive session with the delegation, INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan noted that the visit came at a strategic time, shortly after the conclusion of the off-cycle governorship election in Osun State and right on the cusp of the official campaign season for the 2027 General Election.

Amupitan highlighted that recent off-cycle governorship contests and legislative by-elections have served as critical testing grounds for the electoral umpire.

According to him, these exercises allowed the Commission to fine-tune its technological infrastructure, streamline logistics management, and enhance security coordination ahead of the nationwide polls.
