Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.

The governor made the announcement during a well-attended rally at the historic Mapo Hall on Thursday.

He confirmed that he would run on the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).

Addressing supporters at the rally, Makinde said his decision to join the presidential race was driven by what he described as the need to reposition the country and offer Nigerians a fresh political direction.

“I, Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde, announce my candidacy for the position of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he told the cheering crowd.

Structure

The declaration marked a departure from the mainstream structure of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where internal divisions have continued to deepen in recent months.

Before the public declaration, Makinde led the Tanimu Turaki-aligned faction of the PDP in the state into a formal alliance with the APM through a Memorandum of Understanding.

The agreement is expected to reshape the political landscape in the South-West ahead of the 2027 elections.

Under the arrangement, Makinde will emerge as the APM’s presidential candidate, while loyalists within the faction, including aspirants for governorship, National Assembly and state assembly seats, are expected to contest under the APM platform.
