9 Goals, 21 Assists: Bruno Fernandes completes greatest creative season in Premier League history

Bruno Now Stands Alone: 21 Assists Rewrites Premier League History
Fernandes Claims 21 Assists, Most in Single EPL Season

Bruno Fernandes has broken the Premier League record for most assists in a single season.

He registered his 21st assist of the 2025/26 season on the final day against Brighton.

The Manchester United captain delivered the historic moment in the 33rd minute at the Amex Stadium. His corner found the head of Patrick Dorgu, who powered the ball past Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen to give United the lead.

Fernandes entered the final match level with Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne on 20 assists. With his 21st assist, he now stands alone as the Premier League’s most creative player in a single campaign.

“Today I was lucky enough to get that,” Fernandes told Sky Sports. “Jonny believed more than me in that set-piece we prepared for Patrick because I was not so sure he would be able to score with his head. I got my assist but the main thing is we won today and finished very strong.”

A season of creative dominance

The 31-year-old finishes the league season with 9 goals and 21 assists in 35 appearances. He created 136 chances across the campaign, more than any other player in the division.

His total of 136 chances created is 43 more than the second-highest player, Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai. Fernandes also recorded 19 games in which he both scored and assisted for United, a tally bettered only by Wayne Rooney (35) and Ryan Giggs (22) in the club’s history.

The assist record shattered a mark that had stood for nearly a quarter of a century. Henry set the original benchmark of 20 assists for Arsenal in the 2002/03 season. De Bruyne equalled it for Manchester City in 2019/20. Neither player managed to reach 21.

Europe’s elite company

Fernandes’s 21 assists place him alongside two of European football’s greatest creative forces. Lionel Messi recorded 21 assists for Barcelona in the 2019/20 La Liga season. Thomas Müller also achieved 21 assists for Bayern Munich in the same campaign in the Bundesliga.

No player in England’s top flight had ever reached that number. Until now.

The Portuguese midfielder was named the Premier League Player of the Season on Saturday, one day before his record-breaking performance.

He also collected the Premier League Playmaker of the Season award, finishing nine assists clear of Manchester City’s Rayan Cherki, who finished second with 12.
