Vice President Kashim Shettima arrived in New York, United States, to represent President Bola Tinubu and lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Speaking to journalists after his arrival, Shettima said Nigeria would approach the global gathering with its national interest at the centre of its engagements while maintaining its commitment to multilateral cooperation and Tinubu’s push for reforms in international institutions.
He said Nigeria would use the assembly to press for a more inclusive and representative global system that reflects current economic and demographic realities.

The vice president said the Nigerian delegation would pursue international partnerships based on the country’s interests while advocating greater opportunities for developing nations to participate in global decision-making and benefit from economic growth.
Shettima arrived in New York alongside Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning Doris Uzoka-Anite and other senior government officials.
They were received by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Deputy Chief of Staff to the President (Office of the Vice President), Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu; Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim; Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake; Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim; and other government and diplomatic officials.

During the UNGA General Debate, Shettima was scheduled to present Nigeria’s national statement, outlining the country’s position on issues including global peace and security, sustainable development, economic growth and international cooperation.
He was also expected to participate in high-level multilateral meetings and hold bilateral discussions with foreign leaders, development partners and representatives of international organisations on the sidelines of the assembly.

Through the engagements, the Nigerian delegation planned to push for reforms to the global financial system, greater access to climate financing and technology, stronger support for sustainable development and increased African representation in international decision-making bodies.
