Abubakar Yakubu has been elected the new President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), narrowly defeating Rita Daniels, mother of Nollywood star Regina Daniels, in a closely contested election.
The election was held on Saturday during the guild’s Annual General Meeting in Benin City, Edo State.
Yakubu secured 116 votes against Daniels’ 113, emerging victorious in one of the closest AGN presidential elections in recent years.
A veteran actor and seasoned administrator from Kaduna, Yakubu brings over 25 years of experience in television, film, and stage production. He previously served as the AGN National Secretary from 2019 to 2025, during which he held multiple leadership roles within the guild.

His victory marks a significant moment in the guild’s history, as he becomes the first AGN president from Northern Nigeria since the guild’s establishment in 1998.
Outgoing AGN President Emeka Rollas commended the transparency and conduct of the electoral process, describing it as a testament to the guild’s growth.
In his acceptance remarks, Yakubu pledged to strengthen unity within the guild and build on the legacy of past administrations.
