The Super Eagles have been drawn in Group L of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Nigeria will face Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau and co-hosts Tanzania in the race for a place at the continental showpiece.
The draw was conducted on Tuesday at the headquarters of the Egyptian Football Association in Cairo. Former Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong served as one of the draw assistants, adding a Nigerian presence to the ceremony.
Forty-eight nations were split into 12 groups of four, with 24 teams qualifying for the finals. The 2027 AFCON will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from June 19 to July 17, 2027.
However, Tanzania’s status as a co-host changes the equation. Because the hosts are already guaranteed a place, only the top non-host team from Group L will qualify for the tournament finals.
That means Nigeria must finish above Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau while also competing against Tanzania, who will still play competitive matches despite their automatic qualification.
This caveat also applies to other groups containing co-hosts Kenya and Uganda, while the top two teams from the remaining groups will qualify.
History lessons against familiar opponents
None of Nigeria’s opponents are strangers. Madagascar carry painful memories for Nigerian fans after stunning the Super Eagles 2-0 during the group stage of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. The Barea have proven they can beat Africa’s best on their day.
The recent head-to-head record is evenly split. Nigeria defeated Madagascar home and away during the qualifiers for the 2012 AFCON, but the 2019 tournament defeat serves as a cautionary tale.

Guinea-Bissau have also become a familiar adversary. In the build-up to the 2023 AFCON, the two nations shared victories. Guinea-Bissau won 1-0 in Abuja, a result that shocked Nigerian fans, before the Super Eagles secured victory in the reverse fixture in Bissau.
Tanzania were in the same qualifying group as Nigeria during the race to the 2017 AFCON. The two sides played out a goalless draw in Dar es Salaam before Nigeria won 1-0 in Uyo. The Taifa Stars have since improved. Nigeria beat them 2-1 in their opening group match at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, but the contest was far from one-sided.
The qualification calendar
The qualifying campaign will be played across three FIFA international windows. Matchdays one and two are scheduled from September 21 to October 6, 2026. The third and fourth rounds will be played between November 9 and 17, 2026. The decisive fixtures are fixed for March 22 to 30, 2027.
The 2027 tournament, tagged “PAMOJA 2027” from a Swahili word meaning “together,” symbolises regional unity and collaboration. It will mark the first AFCON hosted by three countries and the first staged in East Africa since 1976.
For the Super Eagles, the path is clear but far from straightforward. Three opponents with nothing to lose and only one ticket to the finals. Complacency is not an option.
