Aiyedatiwa moves to stabilise RUGIPO, sets up minimum wage committee

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has taken fresh steps to restore stability at the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo (RUGIPO), with the inauguration of a special committee to implement the new minimum wage structure for staff and address long-standing salary issues.

The move follows a series of consultations between the state government, the institution’s management, and labour unions, aimed at resolving pay disputes and aligning the institution’s wage system with current government policy.

The newly constituted committee has been assigned to review payroll records, identify discrepancies, and harmonise the implementation of the minimum wage across the institution.

It is chaired by the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Olaolu Akindolire, and includes Wunmi Ilawole, Olaleye Phillips, Asonja Oluwole Festus, and Abiodun Ogunduboye.

Beyond the audit exercise, the team is also expected to work closely with relevant state agencies and union representatives to design a sustainable payment framework that supports the long-term financial stability of the polytechnic.

In a parallel intervention, Aiyedatiwa has approved the immediate payment of three months’ outstanding salary arrears, offering relief to affected staff members.

The Commissioner for Education, Igbekele Ajibefun, described the intervention as crucial to restoring confidence within the institution.

He said resolving the wage issues was necessary to stabilise operations and rebuild trust between management and staff.

As part of wider efforts to strengthen leadership at the institution, the governor also confirmed Simeon Olorunwa Adegun as the substantive Rector of RUGIPO.

He had been serving in an acting capacity since October 2024.

According to the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Ebenezer Adeniyan, the interventions reflect the administration’s commitment to improving governance in state-owned tertiary institutions while prioritising workers’ welfare.

He added that the reforms are expected to reduce the recurring industrial tensions that have, over time, disrupted the academic calendar at the polytechnic.
