Apple weighs Gemini for new Siri upgrade

Apple is reportedly considering Google’s Gemini AI to power a delayed Siri overhaul, reflecting struggles with its Apple Intelligence rollout.

According to Bloomberg, Apple is testing two versions of the assistant: one named Linwood using its in-house models, and another, Glenwood, running on external AI technology.

The company has also explored partnerships with OpenAI and Anthropic.

The delay has highlighted Apple’s challenges in delivering on its iOS 18 AI promises. While other features launched, Siri’s major update was pushed back to 2026.

Apple admitted to the postponement earlier this year, citing development setbacks.

Industry reports indicate that Google is training a custom Gemini version designed to run on Apple’s servers under its Private Cloud Compute framework. This would give Apple tighter security while outsourcing some AI functionality.

Apple’s decision to consider a rival’s model underscores the internal turmoil surrounding its AI push. Responsibility for projects has shifted internally, raising doubts about Apple’s ability to scale its AI ambitions independently.

If adopted, Gemini would enable Siri to handle more complex personal tasks across iOS apps, aligning with capabilities already available on Google’s Pixel 10. Analysts suggest such a move could reassure investors and users that Apple is serious about closing the gap in AI innovation.

Apple had also explored including Gemini alongside ChatGPT as an option within Apple Intelligence. However, the company has not yet shipped that feature. Adopting Gemini for Siri could mirror Samsung’s approach, which blends its own Galaxy AI models with Gemini support.

A final decision has not been made, and Apple may still rely solely on its in-house models. However, the potential partnership signals a pragmatic shift for a company long known for self-reliance.
