Botafogo secured their place in the last 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup despite suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid.
The Brazilian side’s disciplined defensive display frustrated Diego Simeone’s men, who needed to win by at least three goals to progress but fell short of the mark.
From the opening whistle, Atlético dominated possession but struggled to break down Botafogo’s organised and resolute backline. Even though the Spanish giants carved out several half-chances in the first half, they lacked the final touch that could turn their control into goals.

Simeone, clearly desperate for inspiration, introduced French star Antoine Griezmann at the start of the second half to ignite his side’s attack.

Griezmann almost made an immediate impact after latching onto a chance on the left wing but firing his shot against the post from a tight angle. Despite this bright spark, Atletico’s frustrations continued as Alexander Sorloth, who entered the contest with the tournament’s highest xG, headed wide from six yards out.
VAR drama and Snoop Dogg’s surprise appearance
There was late drama when Griezmann finally found the net inside the area in the dying minutes. That said, the goal was far too late to change Atletico’s fate. The game also featured controversial VAR moments, particularly when Julian Alvarez appeared to have been fouled in the box. However, a prior infringement by Sorloth saw the penalty award overturned in favour of a free-kick to Botafogo.
Adding unexpected flavour to the evening was the presence of music icon Snoop Dogg. He was spotted dancing and wearing Botafogo colours among the passionate Brazilian fans.
Botafogo, though under pressure throughout, showed incredible defensive resilience and looked dangerous on the break. Their ability to soak up 23 Atlético shots – 17 inside the box – and restrict them to one goal was applaudable.
With this result and PSG’s win over Seattle, Botafogo finished second in Group B. The Brazilians will now face the winners of Group A – likely Inter Miami or Palmeiras – in the next round. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid’s journey ends in disappointment.
