Audi TP Wheatley walks away amid Aston Martin interest and F1 power shift

Jonathan Wheatley has left his role as Team Principal of Formula One outfit Audi.

A major shake-up has hit the Audi Formula 1 Team camp with immediate effect. Team principal Jonathan Wheatley has stepped down suddenly, sending ripples across the paddock.

The development comes just 24 hours after reports linked him with a move to Aston Martin F1 Team. At 58, the experienced Brit now finds himself at the centre of a high-stakes managerial shuffle.

A statement from Audi said Wheatley was leaving for “personal reasons”. However, insiders suggest deeper factors influenced the abrupt decision.

Mattia Binotto will take over the responsibilities of team principal alongside his current duties. The Italian will steer operations while Audi evaluates its next structural direction.

The move follows an internal board meeting involving both Wheatley and Binotto on Friday. Despite being contracted for the season, Wheatley’s departure was fast-tracked immediately.

He will now enter a period of ‘gardening leave’ before taking up any new role. Notably, one motivation for his exit was a desire to return to the United Kingdom.

Audi are not expected to look for a direct replacement for Wheatley at this stage.

Instead, a revised structure could see operational duties split under Binotto’s oversight.

Meanwhile, Aston Martin’s interest remains a major subplot in this unfolding story. Owner Lawrence Stroll is believed to have offered Wheatley a senior leadership role.

This would place him within a structure led technically by Adrian Newey. Newey, widely regarded as the sport’s greatest designer, joined the team last year.

“I would like to reaffirm that Adrian Newey is my partner and an important shareholder. He is AMR’s managing technical partner… built on a shared vision of success.”

Stroll added that the team deliberately avoids a traditional principal structure. This model allows Newey to focus purely on strategic and engineering excellence.

Elsewhere, discussions with Christian Horner have resurfaced but face internal resistance. Newey is reportedly opposed, following a strained end to their long partnership.

If Wheatley joins, Newey could fully concentrate on performance improvements. Aston Martin currently sit last, struggling with development gaps and engine reliability concerns.
