Nigerian singer Ayra Starr has shared her experience of moving to New York, weeks after leaving Lagos for a management deal with Roc Nation.

The Afrobeats star described her new life in the American city as lonely and challenging, with the cold weather adding to her discomfort.

In a recent post on Substack, Ayra Starr wrote about the emptiness of her apartment and how the freezing temperatures have made adjusting difficult.

She admitted that the move sometimes brings feelings of doubt and regret, noting that the cold can feel demotivating and isolating.

The singer reflected on how she would have been enjoying the festive season in Nigeria, but instead, she is coping with solitude far from home.

Ayra Starr said she is now focused on herself, entering a phase where she is less concerned about others’ opinions and more about her own journey.

She wrote: “It’s so cold it feels like the city is actively trying to unalive my motivation.

“It’s the kind of cold that makes you realize happiness was just a summer hallucination, and I can’t stop the tiny voice at the back of my mind sarcastically saying, ‘Who sent you work?’

“I would have been enjoying Detty December with my fellow citizens in Nigeria but I am stuck in the cold and loneliness of New York because I took a rebellious risk.

“I’m now in my nobody gets me era,” adding that she no longer cares about proving herself to others.
