Boldswitch unveils FacePay for facial recognition tipping

Boldswitch has launched FacePay, a biometric feature that lets users tip anyone simply by scanning their face through the app’s camera feature.

According to the fintech company, FacePay eliminates the need for account numbers, QR codes, or phone numbers when sending small payments. Tippers only need to scan the recipient’s face, and if the person is registered on Boldswitch, the transfer is completed instantly.

The company said FacePay was built to solve the common awkwardness people face when trying to reward service workers or strangers. “Now you don’t have to ask anyone for account details or even speak,” Boldswitch said in a release.

The feature is already live in the Boldswitch mobile app. To use it, users must update to the latest version and enable camera access.

This is the first phase of Boldswitch’s broader plan to enable biometric payments across Africa. The company said the next stage will allow people to make purchases in physical stores using only facial recognition.

“This is about making digital payments feel more human,” said Glad Akhison, CEO of Boldswitch. “We believe facial identity is the future of everyday transactions.”

FacePay also offers added privacy since users no longer need to share bank details publicly. The service is currently available nationwide and supports transfers in naira.

Boldswitch said FacePay is free to use and that it plans to expand its use cases in the coming months.
