President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, for winning the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
He described the hard‑earned third‑place finish as a “bronze that feels like gold”. The Super Eagles defeated seven‑time champions Egypt in a penalty shootout after a goalless draw in Casablanca.
Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali emerged as the hero of the bronze‑medal match. He produced two critical saves to deny Egypt’s Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush during the shootout. Ademola Lookman subsequently scored the decisive penalty for a 4‑2 victory.

The triumph followed a painful semi‑final exit against host nation Morocco just days earlier. That match also ended 0‑0 after extra time before Morocco prevailed 4‑2 in a penalty shootout.
President Tinubu commended the squad’s resilience in overcoming that disappointment.
This bronze medal is Nigeria’s ninth third‑place finish in AFCON history. The nation has now won the continental title three times, finished as runner‑up four times, and placed third on nine occasions.
Coach Eric Chelle expressed great pride in his players’ effort and character. The team now returns home with a podium finish, having concluded a challenging tournament on a resolute high.
