Bundesliga: Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface wins Rookie of the Month award again


Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has been named Bundesliga’s Rookie of the Month for September – a second straight month.

The 22-year-old was announced winner of the prestigious monthly award on Friday, 13th October.

Boniface had also won the award in August. He only joined Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen from Union Saint-Gilloise during the summer transfer window.

The Rookie of the Month award recognises the best-performing young talent in the league.

Boniface beat RB Leipzig player Xavi Simons and TSG Hoffenheim’s Maximilian Beier to win the September award.

The Nigerian striker won by 40 percent of the fans’ votes, 30 percent each from the 18 Bundesliga team captains and a panel of pundits.

He scored two goals and provided three assists in just four league games for Leverkusen in September.

Earlier in August, Boniface defeated Alphonso Davies, Harry Kane and Kevin Behrens to win the Bundesliga player of the month.

The achievement made him the second player, after Erling Haaland in 2020, to be named the league’s best player and ‘Rookie of the Month’ in the same month.

Boniface made his debut for the Super Eagles in September against Sao Tomé and Princípe.

He featured in his first start for Nigeria in a 2-2 draw against Saudi Arabia in an international friendly on Friday.

Boniface will hope he features again for the Super Eagles on Monday when they confront Mozambique in another international friendly.
