Cambodia orders Africans to leave country by May 31 or face jail‎

Cambodia has ordered African nationals living in the country to leave by May 31, 2026, warning that anyone who remains beyond the deadline will face arrest, imprisonment, and heavy fines.

In a press notice signed by Lt. Gen. Som Sopheap of the General Department of Immigration, authorities announced that the immigration waiver granted to African nationals will officially expire at the end of May.

The directive specifically mentions citizens of Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda, and other African countries who had been residing in Cambodia under temporary waivers or overstayed their residency.

‎According to the statement, starting from June 1, Cambodian police will launch nationwide operations to arrest undocumented foreigners. Those found in violation will face a two‑year jail term and a fine of $8,000 before being deported.

“The Cambodia Police will start arresting any foreigner at any hideout in Cambodia from 1st of June 2026 for overstay and will hand over to the immigration authorities for legal action,” the notice stated.

Officials stressed that all affected persons must comply strictly with the directive, adding that violations of Cambodia’s immigration laws will not be tolerated.
