Messi targets historic sixth World Cup as Argentina name squad for 2026 edition

Barcelona legend Lionel Messi eyes sixth World Cup as Argentina name strong squad

Lionel Messi is set to make history once again as Argentina prepare for the 2026 World Cup. The iconic forward will captain the defending champions into another global showdown.

Now approaching 39, Messi’s leadership remains central to Argentina’s ambitions of retaining their crown.

Having guided the team to glory in Qatar, his presence brings both experience and belief. The triumph almost four years ago came after a tense penalty shootout victory over 2018 winners France.

Messi already holds the record for most World Cup appearances. With 26 matches played, he now stands on the brink of another milestone.

Interestingly, he will join Cristiano Ronaldo in an elite group. Both legends are set to feature in a sixth World Cup tournament.

Argentina’s squad includes key figures from their 2022 success. Emiliano Martinez, Nicolas Otamendi, Lisandro Martinez, Cristian Romero, and Nicolas Tagliafico all return. Midfield strength also remains intact with Alexis Mac Allister, Rodrigo De Paul, and Enzo Fernandez included.

Meanwhile, attacking options remain formidable with Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez leading the line. Interestingly, seventeen title-winning players are back for another run.

Argentina will begin their campaign in Kansas City against Algeria. They will then face Austria and Jordan in Dallas.

Messi’s fitness has been closely monitored in recent days. However, his club confirmed it was only “muscle fatigue” in his left hamstring after their latest Major League Soccer (MLS) game on Monday.

He has made 198 appearances for Argentina so far. Two upcoming friendlies could see him reach the historic 200 mark.

Despite some notable names missing, the squad remains balanced and competitive as Argentina head into the tournament as one of the favourites.
