As the start of English Premier League 2020/21 season draws closer, fans as usual, have been speculating on how the season would pan out.
Most clubs in the top flight are strengthening their squads in the transfer window. Of the traditional top 6 clubs in the Premier League, The Gunners divide opinions the most. Some claim they’ll finish out of the top 6 as they did last season, while others believe they’ll make the top 6.
But can Arsenal actually surprise everyone and mount a title challenge?
In comparison to other top 6 clubs, the finances don’t bode well for the club as they go on a journey back to glory. The COVID-19 pandemic hit hard on their finances as confirmed by the club.
They tried to control the impact by asking their players, coaches, and other senior staff members to take a voluntary pay cut in wages. They further laid off 55 staff members. The club clearly is not financially strong to compete with other Premier League giants in the current market.

Arsenal is left with the option of being creative with its transfer strategy. Though they are yet to land prime target Thomas Partey, they have signed William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes. This will bolster their defensive and attacking options.
Sources also claim Dani Ceballos will return to the club on loan in the coming weeks. The manager has also claimed that skipper, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang is close to signing a new contract.

Despite the transfers they’ve been able to complete, mounting a proper title challenge seems like a longshot. Last season, they finished 43 points behind Liverpool. This is a big gap for a few signings to close. They also lack squad depth in different areas on the pitch. It means injuries and loss of form could dash their title hopes pretty quickly.
Arsenal reinvigorated under Arteta
On the bright side, Arsenal seems to be reinvigorated under new manager Mikel Arteta. They’ve had a massive turnaround in form since his appointment in November and ended the season on a high.
They’ve also proved they are up to the task when it comes to playing big teams. They showed this against Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Chelsea.
They also surprised many by bagging two domestic trophies in the last month, The Emirates FA Cup and The Community Shield.
Coming along with these trophies is a winning mentality. Arsenal is a team with momentum going into the new season as they’ve won four out of their last five games.
Though mounting a title challenge still seems like a long shot, it’s too soon for them to be written off. A top 4 finish seems more likely than not.
