Manchester United has confirmed Casemiro will depart the club upon the expiry of his contract this summer, ending the Brazilian midfielder’s four-year tenure at Old Trafford.
The club announced the 33-year-old’s departure on Wednesday. United decided against triggering a one-year extension option in his deal.
Casemiro requested the early announcement for clarity. This move puts an end to speculation about his future and also allows him to plan his next career move.
His exit primarily results from financial strategy. Casemiro earns approximately £300,000 per week. Removing this salary creates significant capacity in the wage bill.
Consequently, United now plans a midfield refresh. The club seeks a younger, long-term replacement.
A mixed legacy at Old Trafford
Casemiro joined from Real Madrid in 2022. The transfer fee reached £70 million with add-ons. He made 146 appearances for the club.
He scored 21 goals during his tenure. His header secured the 2023 Carabao Cup final win. He also won the FA Cup in 2024.
His form, however, drew criticism at times. Pundits questioned his pace in recent seasons. Nevertheless, he delivered a man-of-the-match performance last weekend.

Planning for the future
United’s recruitment team is already identifying targets. A new defensive midfielder is a summer priority. England’s Elliot Anderson is a primary target.
The club also monitors Adam Wharton and Carlos Baleba. These players represent a younger profile.
Casemiro aims to continue playing at a high level and has attracted interest from Saudi Arabia and MLS. He also hopes to play in the 2026 World Cup.
His final United match could be against Nottingham Forest. The club will honour him at that final home game.
