Liverpool lose another legend as Robertson confirms exit

Liverpool confirm Robertson departure at season’s end

Liverpool have confirmed that Andy Robertson will leave the club at the conclusion of the 2025/26 season. This will bring down the curtain on a nine-year Anfield career. That career transformed the Scottish left-back from a relegation-bound full-back into a genuine club legend.

The 32-year-old Scotland captain, who joined from Hull City for just £8 million in 2017, will depart when his contract expires this summer. He follows Mohamed Salah, who announced his own exit during the March international break, out of Anfield. Moreover, both arrived in the same transfer window. They became foundational figures in Liverpool’s return to the summit of English and European football.

Robertson has made 373 appearances for the Reds, winning two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the FIFA Club World Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, and the Community Shield. He also formed a formidable partnership with Trent Alexander-Arnold. The England right-back left for Real Madrid last summer.

His role has diminished this season under head coach Arne Slot following the arrival of Hungary left-back Milos Kerkez. Kerkez joined from Bournemouth last summer for £40 million. Robertson was a target for Tottenham during the January transfer window, with a deal agreed in principle between the clubs. However, Liverpool could not proceed because they were unable to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan at Roma.

The farewell

“It’s never easy leaving a club like Liverpool,” Robertson said. “It has been a huge part of mine and my family’s life for the last nine years. I’ve had opportunities to leave and I’ve not taken them because of how difficult it is to leave this club. But I know football moves on, I know teams move on, and I think now is the time for me to move on.”

Robertson, who began his senior career in 2012 with amateur Queen’s Park before moving to Dundee United, insisted he would not call himself a Liverpool legend. “I’ll let other people say if I’m a Liverpool legend or not. I think you know me well enough that I will never accept that,” he told club media.

The farewell can wait. Robertson is determined to ensure his final months at Liverpool are defined by contribution, not nostalgia. “The time to have the emotional farewell and tell the fans what they mean to me, that will come closer to the end. I’m not quite ready for that yet.”

For now, Robertson will lead Scotland at their first World Cup since 1998, then decide his next move. But when the final whistle blows on his Anfield career, one of the Premier League’s greatest bargain signings will walk off a legend. Whether he accepts the label or not.
