Speaking during the interview, Mrs Stephen stated that the drama originated from divine inspiration while listening to a radio program. Despite financial constraints, she received unexpected support from a stranger, enabling her to bring the story to life.

She describes “Joba” as a movie that is special to her, however, she noted that she doesn’t ‘have any favourite film’.

She stated, “I don’t have any favourite of my film, but, I do have one film that is special to me.

It’s my film called Joba,” Mrs Stephen explained further.

It’s because Joba is a film… (She pauses) a Christian film that is a gift with the way it was given to me. It wasn’t something that just emerged, it was gifted to me.”

She went further to explain how she garnered inspiration for the movie, she stated further, “I was listening to a song repeatedly while driving in my car; I then told God that I genuinely do love this song and would like him to show me how I can a write movie script that will edify this music

Biodun Stephen, a philosophy graduate from the University of Ife, admitted to once considering theatre arts a waste of time.

“I was a writer and a radio drama actor,” she explained, “which is where I got my start. Right after university, I jumped back into radio as a DJ and then became a news broadcaster.”

Iroko TV, where she served as a commission producer, was the first platform to truly give her a voice. “My fame largely stems from the impact Iroko TV had on me and my films,” she said.

“It was a multi-diaspora platform, which is why I think many people in the diaspora are familiar with my work.”

They essentially answered my call by offering me a platform and making me a commission producer,” she elaborated. “It was almost as if they said, ‘You have a story to tell, and we’re happy to back you with funding.’ We didn’t have the money when we started making the film.”

Raised by a single mother, Biodun Stephen’s films consistently portray strong female characters.

She described her movie as a celebration of her mother’s strength and resilience, featuring female characters overcoming challenges.

In her films, she incorporates fragments of her reality, particularly drawing from her experience of single parenthood and her mother’s struggle to remarry. These narratives reflect broader societal issues faced by women.

Her favorite film, “Joba,” originated from divine inspiration while listening to a radio program. Despite financial constraints, she received unexpected support from a stranger, enabling her to bring the story to life.

Regarding government support for the film industry, she acknowledged existing challenges and emphasized the need for both governmental assistance and self-sufficiency within the industry.

She highlighted the importance of mutual efforts between producers and the government to foster growth while also addressing concerns about taxation and accountability.

She believed the entertainment industry was not a priority for the government because it was built out of pocket— out of a few, we are still all out of pocket.

There at one time, some funds were injected from the central bank. But again, Nigeria still happens. I hear some people didn’t pay back the loan. You know, so those are the issues that we have. You know, sometimes there’s a particular government that will want to come and do something to aid.

But we as a producer also need to keep encouraging. So, you know, whilst we’re shouting the government, we also need, we, the producers, also need, we also need to play our part. If something goes in, let that same thing come out. And then so that another thing can go in

So everybody has a part to play. We just can’t keep shouting at the government and we’re also all afraid that if the government sees that there’s some money to be made, they will tax the hell out of us. And nobody wants to pay taxes to a government that is not doing anything for a citizen. You know, it’s a lot. A lot is going on.”

Mohbad: Autopsy on exhumed corpse may not reveal natural cause of death— Pathologist

A Pathologist from Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) Teaching Hospital, Ogun State, Professor Olatunjii Philip, has disclosed that carrying out an autopsy on a corpse after exhumation may not reveal the natural cause of death.

Professor Olatunjii in an exclusive interview with News Round The Clock, NRTC, said most of the internal organs of a corpse exhumed after some days will have become dead or destroyed.

“If you want to get causes or diseases from looking at the internal organs you can’t get it because all the cells are dead, you know, you can’t see anything, the cells are no more intact. The structure will have been destroyed because it’s just like an animal that has died, you will see that most of the organs will have been destroyed,” the professor said.

He maintained that the internal organs would not be useful for anything, saying that conducting an autopsy required samples of various important parts of the body.

Professor Olatunji, however, said if the person died of gunshots or stabbing, the autopsy would reveal the natural cause of the death because the mark would still be on the skin.

“Bones don’t get formless that way very early. If a fracture or something is happening to the bone or the bone has broken or the joints have, you can still see that. So, the structure, when you are looking at the structure of the body, the skin, you can still identify some things that might have happened to the body from the standpoint of the skin, the bone.

“Now, if the person is poisoned, if there is a toxin you can still get it because there are some chemicals that you can use.”

According to him, the cause of death can be either natural or unnatural such as old age among others.

Autopsy, according to the National Library Of Medicine, means self study of a dead body which is carried out for clinical as well as medico-legal purposes.

Clinical autopsy, loosely termed pathological autopsy, is carried out to diagnose the disease that has caused the mortality when antemortem efforts have failed. Many times clinical autopsy is done despite the cause of death having been established ante mortem, to study the disease process in situ, thus enriching medical knowledge.

Medico-legal (ML) autopsy is performed to provide answers to questions about the identity, cause of death, time of death, circumstances of death, etc., thus helping law enforcement agencies to solve the crime.

On Thursday, September 21, the Nigeria Police Force and health officials took action to exhume the remains of the late singer, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba known as Mohbad following circumstances surrounding his death and the call for justice.

Mohbad (Credit: NRTC Library)

The Lagos State Police Command after confirming the exhumation further said the autopsy had been completed.

The police disclosed that the nurse who reportedly injected the deceased singer before his demise had been arrested, but the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Lagos State Council said the arrested individual is not a registered nurse.

Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, and since then, accusing fingers have been pointed at his former boss and a popular singer, Naira Marley, and his crew.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with NRTC, the professor stated that getting the real cause of the death after burial is usually difficult owing to putrefaction (decaying of the body).

He explained that an autopsy days after burial will not show the cause of death in most natural deaths, but an autopsy after burial on someone who was shot is likely possible.

The National Library Of Medicine report added that although the procedure of both autopsies is the same, they differ from each other in many aspects.

“Usually the clinical autopsy is performed by the pathologist and ML autopsy by a forensic expert. However on occasions, especially in Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) setup, the pathologist may have to perform a ML autopsy. On the other hand, an autopsy started as an ML autopsy by a forensic expert may turn out to be a purely clinical autopsy, e.g. cases of sudden death.”

What I’ve learnt from talking to married men in Nigeria

As a young man who’s keen on having a successful marriage and strongly believes that marriage is not a scam, I always look forward to talking to married men who have been with their wives for a number of years spanning a decade and more.

What I’ve learnt from them is insightful and worth sharing:

Marry a woman who loves you more than you love her

“It’s better to marry a woman who loves you more than you do,” one said as his first advice to me. “When a woman loves you, she’ll do everything, I mean everything to make the marriage work,” he added.

Another said, “the success or failure of a home or marriage often depends on the woman, on your wife.”

It then occurred to me that that’s why most of the married men that I listened to emphasize that when a woman loves a man more than the man loves her, the marriage becomes smooth sailing.

Never cheat on your wife

Unhappy Couple

Most of them have the same belief about infidelity: no matter how sexually tempted you are, never cheat on your wife. You’ll begin to lose affection for her as soon as you start. And if she finds out, that’s when your home begins to fall apart gradually.

Not cheating on your wife also means you don’t do anything without her knowledge. “Stay completely loyal to your wife,” one said.

“Do not give her room to doubt your faithfulness,” another man said.

Treat your wife as your best friend and equal, not as your subordinate

One of them who’s way older said, “Do not Lord over your wife. Do not treat her as inferior to you.”

In other words, make her your friend, your best friend with whom you can share issues and laugh. You should respect her and value her opinions and insights. Never dismiss anything your wife tells you or is concerned about as irrelevant.

Unhappy Couple After an Argument in the Living Room at Home.

Lastly, do not make her feel starved of anything: money, love, sex, affection. “If you see a wife as your demi god, you’ll treat her and ‘worship’ her better,” one said.

“Women blossom in the atmosphere of love,” one of the men concluded.

5 Nigerian men tell us how to stop being a simp

Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

A simp, over the years, has been used to mean a man who is desperate for the attention and affection of a girl.

According to CNN Health, it is the new slang teens use to insult boys who are ‘too nice’ to girls.

Nonetheless, this approach tends to be one-sided, with their crush not reciprocating the same feelings.

When a guy is “simping” for a girl, he might generously offer compliments, give unexpected presents, send affectionate messages, cover her expenses, go to great lengths to impress her, or make himself overly accessible to her.

In a way, every man has the potential to be a simp or may start simping for a girl without even knowing.

However, it is important to note that treating women with basic respect and dignity is not simping.

5 Nigerian men tell us how to stop being a simp

In this interview with NRTC, 5 Nigerian men tell us how to stop being a simp and the dangers of being a simp.

Theodore

Well, the thing about being a simp is that it’s kind of subjective. What one considers simping, another might see as cute. But if we are talking about the extreme ends of actions considered as simping, then these are my takes:

  1. Have discussions about life and relationships with older, or more experienced people in that aspect. It doesn’t mean one must take everything they say to heart, but their experience can give insight;
  2. Read more about acts of service;
  3. Sometimes, for no reason, especially when no one’s life is at stake, be selfish for no reason.

Akinola

First, to stop being a simp, one must first realize he’s one. Understand his self worth. And then realize there is always someone better who would accept you for what you are and still have a better characteristics than the current so-called crush. Channel all the energy used to get attention from someone who obviously doesn’t give a damm to something worthwhile.

And the irony if thing is that, the guy can stop all those care and affection and the lady will begin to miss it, thereby start giving him attention. I mean with the number of pretty ladies out there, why will somebody’s son be wasting his time? Statistically, ladies are supposed to be chasing guys by now because they’re way too many everywhere. So the simp or whatever should come back to their senses.

Ernest

To stop being a s, you have to define the goals from the very beginning. Like be on the same page. Be smart enough to know that you’re turning to a simp and call it a stop.

One of the dangers is that sapa will kill you. We invest to make profit but your investment as the simp you are, na loss you collect, and besides it’s psychologically draining.

At some point in our lives, everyone would have been a simp in one way of the other. But the best way to stop being a simp is to work on our self-image. The way we perceive ourselves matter. And if we don’t place any value on who we are, we’ll always place it on someone else.

The danger of being a simp is that the person could end up being treated as as a low quality man. Nobody will have regard for such person because simps don’t even have regard for themselves.

I believe the best way to stop being a simp is to stop being closer to the person you are simping over. Just like addiction, to stop it requires to stop doing act. The danger behind this is that it makes one less of a being, because one will always seek validation of people.

Even though the grass is not greener on the other side, UI students insist they must leave the country

Almost every UI student is planning to leave the country in search of greener pastures, and even if the grass is not greener on the other side, they insist they must leave the country.

The exodus (popularly called Japa or brain drain) of middle-class and highly skilled Nigerians which has been occurring in waves since the late 1980s to early 1990s is now becoming alarming every passing day.

This same trend has become prevalent among students and graduates alike. Recently, The PUNCH reported that 128,770 Nigerian students move to UK in seven years.

In a video interview conducted by our Correspondent, he spoke to students at the University of Ibadan on their intention to travel out of the country or stay back after their graduation and the motivation for their intention.

For Samad, a final year history student, even though the grass is not greener on the other side, “let’s just get there first” was the young man’s response. In the same vein, Bella, an agricultural economics student, feels the grass will definitely be greener and life is better there.

For other students like Joshua, another history student, it is due to everything going on in the country. “The economic situation is bad, unemployment is skyrocketing, things are not favourable. I believe the best thing is to leave the country,” he said.

When asked if it turns out that the grass is not greener on the other side, he said: “I still think that regardless, whatsoever situation I find myself out there would be better than what we have here in Nigeria.”

However, for a student like Oyinlola, a final year student of arts and social sciences education, he believes that there should be proper planning before leaving. “I can’t just leave without having a plan (on education and work). For someone like me whose father is not Dangote, I can’t go to school alone; I have to find a job/work to support myself while still schooling,” he said.

For most of the students interviewed, like Oyinlola, job opportunities, quality education top the reasons they are planning to leave Nigeria, not just for leaving’s sake.

In search of quality education

According to Sodiq, a student in the department of linguistics and African languages, “Going abroad gives one many tools and opportunities to learn.” This belief is also shared by Tijesunimi, a philosophy student who affirms that the education system is better there and they do not waste students’ life.

“If I get a scholarship to travel to travel or study, I’ll leave. My main purpose of leaving is to study because the stress in Nigeria is choking. It’s so stressful here in Nigeria when it comes to education. Talk of ASUU strike and stuff like that,” Tijesunimi said.

Rhoda, Tijesunimi’s friend in the same department, said she just wants to further her studies there; probably go do Masters there and may start living there afterwards.

Leaving Nigeria for job opportunities

While talking about job opportunities, “The pay for my course out there is more handsome than the pay here and I also want to leave for a better life,” Abdulmojeed, a medical laboratory science student said.

Noah, another student in the department of arts and social sciences education wants to leave the country for another country where his skills as a language teacher will be valued.

“Those in medicals are leaving this country to better places where they are well valued. So if there is a country where I’ll be valued, I’ll better leave. As a language instructor, I can leave this country to another where they are deficient of language teachers. It becomes an advantage to me because I’m going to the country that needs the skill I have and I can also utilize my skill there,” Noah said.

However, Samuel, a Communication and Language Arts student seems to have a different intention. He said it depends on the opportunities available to him here or there.

“The world has become a global village and most times, it’s not imperative to go abroad to receive certain opportunities. You can get opportunities in Nigeria. So while I’m not too keen about traveling abroad to get opportunities, I’m more about developing myself so that I can take advantage of the opportunities available here to me,” Samuel said.

“But of course, I’ll love to travel out at times, see the world, but I do not believe that the grass is always greener on the other side and that you have to go abroad to get opportunities to make a relevance in life,” he added.

Like Samuel, Oluwajuwon, another history student, is not also keen on leaving the country, he said it might be job opportunities, “but if I see good job opportunities in Nigeria, I’ll surely stay,” he added.

For Taiwo, another philosophy student, she is planning of leaving the country to hone her fashion design skills. “Yes, I intend to leave to learn more about my skill (fashion design) and then come back to explore and teach more young girls that can not go to learn over there.”

When asked if there are no places where she can learn fashion design, she replied: “We have a lot of places here in Nigeria, but learning over there seems less stressful and easier. They also have more machines and tools to enable one learn faster.”

Conclusion

From the interview conducted, it appears that the students’ intentions have been polarised into three ideological positions: On the one hand, there are students who believe that, no matter what, the grass is greener on the other side; on the other, there are students planning to leave the country in order to get better job opportunities and decent education; and lastly, students who believe that opportunities abound everywhere, whether here or there (and so students must be equipped with the right skills to grab these opportunities).
