National Screen Free Week: Can it be observed?

Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

This week is the National Screen Free Week for 2024. Are you commemorating it? I guess not because as long as you read this article this week, you are not. Well, you are not alone. I am also not commemorating it because I use a screen to bring this to your screen.

The impossibility of this commemoration is not far-fetched. Folks have built their lives around screen time. Their work, family, and even religious association are dependent on the screen, that is, phones, laptops, iPads, tablets, smart TVs, etc. This commemoration would mean that a lot of people would have to put a hold on their lives for a week.

Is it possible for you not to use your mobile devices for a week?

This question has relatable answers to it. We have to look at some factors before we decide on answers to this question. Most people now earn a living using their mobile gadgets. Others connect to their loved ones, spouses, parents, and children through mobile devices. In that sense, mobile gadgets have been more of a blessing to them and something they cannot do without.

The mental health of many solely lies in the hands of having quality screen time. They unwind and escape the harsh faces of reality through mobile gadgets. So it might be impossible for them to get off their mobile gadgets.

You can decide not to use your mobile devices for a week if you have weighed the disadvantages higher than the advantages. Remember that your decision implies that you will be off from social media, unable to pick up calls except through landline telephones. This decision would also mean that no television watching, you have to seek your amusement from nature and the people around you.

If you have your family members near you, then maybe you can give the National Screen Free week a trial. This can be a possible trial for you if you are the CEO of the company and you have left the affairs of your company in trustworthy hands. But having a screen-free week is a delusion that seems almost impossible this decade.

Why you need to stay screen-free despite the technological advancement

I know it is not easy to stay screen-free for a day not to talk of a week. But you can try a few hours, right? We must not build too much dependency on mobile gadgets such that our lives cannot function properly without them.

High levels of screen time mess with our brain, especially with the production of melatonin, the sleeping hormone. Some people find it hard to sleep without staying glued to their phones. Their gadgets can also keep them up all night depriving them of sleep.

It is quite important to connect to the people around us especially when we are surrounded by our loved ones. Our mobile gadgets should be the reason we stray away from our family. We are very much physical beings who can interact socially without social media.

We understand if you had not prepared for this week to be no screen-time week. Try next week or any other week. You might not be able to run this commemoration for a week as you are a tech bro but you can run it for a day or a few hours. Just make sure you are being intentional and use those few hours off to connect with people around and nature. Let us express our social behaviors without the screen.

Coin d’amour: Why Gen Zs find it hard to sustain a long-distance relationship

Estimated reading time: 5 minutes

Most young people find it hard to stay committed in a long-distance relationship (LDR). They weigh their feelings physically and believe staying committed to someone you cannot see is impossible. Moreover, they forget how their ancestors had partners over a long distance. They sustained their relationships having good faith that their partners were on the same page in love.

Even when the advent of letter writing came to be, people had to wait months to get their letters delivered- another set of months to get a reply. It happens then that people might not find out about their warring partner’s death until a few months later. Their love then not only stood the test of time but that of distance.

Loving in those days was beyond physical criteria, love should go beyond physical connection but a point where souls connect. These days, there is the advent of technology for back-to-back and instant messaging unlike the days of old, We have got video calls to see how your partner is doing over a thousand miles. And if you have all the means, you could catch the next flight or bus or ferry to your partner’s location.

Most Gen Zs believe that they cannot remain faithful in an LDR

Young people air their views on why they cannot stay faithful in an LDR. They have so many excuses as to why they cannot work a relationship over a distance. But these reasons are not viable enough to not give LDR a trial. Some of these views are;

View 1:- What is my partner doing away from me? I do not have to stay faithful to them since I do not know what they are doing.

Answer:- Why are you dating someone you cannot trust? Leave them to unfaithfulness and keep your side of the deal.

View 2:- I cannot stay without touching my partner. My love language is physical touch

Answer:- All is fair in discipline. You have to discipline yourself not to seek that from someone else when your partner is not around.

View 3:- It is peak fooling to date someone over a distance. There is no way to confirm their love.

Answer:- LDR is not peak fooling but another level of commitment that requires sacrifice. People stay true to it and have it right. There are other ways to confirm love other than seeing them physically.

View 4:- It is easier for people in an LDR to cheat than couples staying together.

Answer:- This is a misconception. People cheat on their partners right under their partner’s noses. The issue of cheating on one’s partner is an issue of promiscuity. The same reason people cheat on their partners because of distance is the same reason why they do when they are in proximity.

Some Gen Zs believe in the ritual of breaking up with their partners anytime there is a cause of relocation. The idea of an impossible love over a distance is a wrong mindset. You think you cannot cope even with the provisions technology has made.

Even after the promises of nothing can come in between, distance is the factor that separates them. This issue can be traced back to the fact that most young people start relationships out to satisfy their sexual desires primarily. They constantly make physical connections and neglect the mind and soul connection.

Faithfulness now becomes impossible when their partners are not available to make that physical connection with them. There is no fuel in their mind and soul bank to keep the relationship sailing. Connecting to a partner’s soul and mind is the most beautiful aspect of love to explore. You guys are in sync at the point you connect that way

What is love if it is not tested by distance?

How do you say you love someone when you cannot keep being in love when they are not there? You claim you cannot hold down you cannot ignore your sexual urges for them. Where then is your discipline? Love is patient and kind, if you are not willing to stay faithful to your partner even when you are thousand miles apart, then you need to redefine your feelings.

The distance is not meant to be forever. If you say you love your partner but you cannot stay faithful to them over a distance, it is safe to say that you never loved them at all. Love is a strong emotion to whither over distance. It does not dissipate quickly over a thousand miles.

LDR is not for the weak but you are strong

In the era where relationship people oppress the singles, people in LDR do not have it easy. They constantly wish they are with their partners in proximity but life’s course is way ahead of them. If you find yourself in an LDR, seek constant communication first. Your relationship solely thrives on that at the moment.

Pant after emotional connection rather than your bodies colliding. You gain more emotional security by knowing who your partner is in depth. You know who they are and you find them worthy enough to stay committed to them over a distance.

Which is better between filtered water and tap water?

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

The age-old debate: filtered water vs tap water. Which one reigns supreme? Let’s dive in and explore the pros and cons of each, shall we?

But, let’s be real, folks. Tap water can contain some not-so-great stuff like chlorine, lead, and other contaminants. And if you’re living in an area with older pipes, you might be getting a side of extra chemicals with your H2O. Not exactly the most appealing thought, right?

A picture of a glass of filtered water (Image Credit: Istock Images)

Enter filtered water, the new kid on the block. It’s like the trendy, health-conscious cousin of tap water. With a water filter, you can say goodbye to those pesky contaminants and hello to cleaner, fresher-tasting water. Plus, many filters also add in beneficial minerals and electrolytes, giving your water a boost of extra goodness.

But, here’s the thing: not all filters are created equal. Some might only remove a few contaminants, while others might strip your water of its natural minerals (not ideal, if you ask me). And let’s not forget the cost – filters can range from a few bucks to hundreds of dollars, depending on the type and quality.

So, which one is better? Well, it ultimately comes down to your personal preferences and needs. If you’re living in an area with great tap water and don’t mind the occasional chlorine taste, then stick with what you know! But if you’re looking for an extra layer of protection and a cleaner, more refreshing drink, filtered water might be the way to go.

At the end of the day, it’s all about finding what works best for you and your body. And hey, if you’re still unsure, you can always consult with a water expert (yes, that’s a thing!) or do some more research to find the perfect solution for your hydration needs. Happy sipping, friends!

Autism Awareness Month: All you need to know about Autism

Estimated reading time: 5 minutes

Efe Irele, Nigerian actress sometimes last week put up the “Of course, I am…’ challenge with her autistic brother also creating awareness for autism. All through April is Autism Awareness Month. It is used to sensitize people about the brain and behavioral conditions.

Many people are stereotypical about the way they see autistic people. They paint a picture of how they should behave or look. Some people think autistic people are not meant to be smart or vibrant. Others think they need to be dependent on others before they can do anything. Well, this school of thought might be correct for a set of autistic persons but not for others.

If you are a fan of ‘Heartbreak High’, you would notice Sasha’s reaction when Quinni told her that she was autistic. Sasha had a stereotypical idea of what an autistic person should look like and she considers Quinni ‘too smart’ to be autistic. This month is meant to sensitize the public about brain and behavioral conditions.

A more encompassing term for Autism is Autism spectrum disorder

The World Health Organisation terms the autism condition as Autism spectrum disorder. The disorder appears in many forms. One may not even know if they are autistic. This spectrum disorder affects 1 in 100 children. Let’s see the definition of spectrum disorder according to the World Health Organization.

‘Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a diverse group of conditions. They are characterized by some degree of difficulty with social interaction and communication. Other characteristics are atypical patterns of activities and behaviors, such as difficulty transitioning from one activity to another, a focus on details, and unusual reactions to sensations.’

People with this disorder can most times be unresponsive to social interaction. They might find speaking difficult because they have not focused on the communication process. Autism is usually not diagnosed in childhood until when the age of expressing communication kicks in. But usually, they cannot mostly engage in focused social interaction.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are more inclusive with their definition, ‘Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability caused by differences in the brain.’. In Kayla Taylor’s book, Canaries Among Us, she consistently states the fact that some children have psychological differences and not disorders. She also made mention of the term ‘neurodiversity’.

CDC definition is more inclusive and is my go-to definition for ASD. This condition is caused by how differently the brain is wired in some set of people. On the CDC website, it was further stated that ‘people with ASD may also have different ways of learning, moving, or paying attention.’

How do you know if someone has an Autism spectrum disorder?

Unresponsiveness is the main symptom of the Autism spectrum disorder. There is complete or partial unresponsiveness of such a person to social and interaction skills. CDC highlights some of the symptoms below.

  • Avoids or does not keep eye contact
  • Does not respond to name by 9 months of age
  • Does not show facial expressions like happy, sad, angry, and surprised by 9 months of age
  • Does not play simple interactive games like pat-a-cake by 12 months of age
  • Uses few or no gestures by 12 months of age (for example, does not wave goodbye)
  • Does not share interests with others by 15 months of age (for example, shows you an object that they like)
  • Does not point to show you something interesting by 18 months of age
  • Does not notice when others are hurt o
  • Delayed language skills
  • Delayed movement skills
  • Delayed cognitive or learning skills
  • Hyperactive, impulsive, and/or inattentive behavior
  • Epilepsy or seizure disorder
  • Unusual eating and sleeping habits
  • Gastrointestinal issues (for example, constipation)
  • Unusual mood or emotional reactions
  • Anxiety, stress, or excessive worry
  • Lack of fear or more fear than expected
  • They are upset by 24 months of age
  • Does not notice other children and join them in play by 36 months of age
  • Repeats words or phrases over and over (called echolalia)
  • Plays with toys the same way every time
  • Is focused on parts of objects (for example, wheels)
  • Gets upset by minor changes
  • Has obsessive interests
  • Must follow certain routines
  • Flaps hands, rocks body, or spins self in circles

These are the visible symptoms but mind you, it happens that some people who is diagnosed with this condition might not even exhibit some of these symptoms. It is important that you visit a psychologist to test for these symptoms and proper disgnosis.

Autism Awareness Month

The Autism Awareness month was picked by Bernard Rimland Ph.D in April, 1970. He was a psychologist and autism researcher. The Autism Awareness Month also doubles as the Autism Acceptance Month. It is clear that people living with this condition are ostracized by others. The symptoms of autism are difficult to live with so we should not make life more difficult for them.
