Italy’s failure to reach the World Cup has triggered heartbreak, anger, and renewed scrutiny, and this is evident in Gianluigi Donnarumma’s emotional response to their ill-fate.
Donnarumma has stated he “cried because of the enormous sadness” of not being able to lead Italy to the 2026 World Cup this summer. The defeat came after a penalty shootout loss to Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Italy have now failed to qualify for three successive World Cups, and their latest collapse has intensified criticism across the country.
Goalkeeper Donnarumma made numerous saves in the second half of the encounter. However, he failed to stop any penalties in the shootout.
“Last night, after the match, I cried. I cried because of the disappointment of not being able to lead Italy where it deserves to be,” Donnarumma wrote.
Reports suggested tensions flared during the shootout, as he was also restrained after attempting to confront Bosnia players.
Italy’s football crisis deepens amid calls for leadership overhaul
“I cried because of the enormous sadness I’m feeling, along with the entire Azzurri team,” Donnarumma added. The captain also expressed pride despite the setback.

The Manchester City keeper now faces a long wait for World Cup participation. He will be at least 31 before another opportunity arises.
Criticism has extended beyond the pitch. Political figures have called for major structural changes.
“It is an unacceptable disgrace. Italian football needs a complete overhaul,” the League Party stated.
Italy’s sport minister Andrea Abodi shared similar concerns. He stressed the need for rebuilding from the top. Also, supporters had hoped for redemption after past failures. Instead, they endured another painful exit.
The Azzurri’s prolonged absence from global football’s biggest stage raises serious concerns about their future direction.
