Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has admitted that he has not seen or spoken with Alexander Isak in a week, describing the ongoing transfer dispute as a “lose-lose situation.”
The Swedish striker is pushing for a move to Liverpool, but Newcastle rejected a £110m bid earlier this month.
The 25-year-old later released a statement claiming the club had broken promises. He insisted he was assured of an exit if a major team came forward with an appropriate fee.
However, Newcastle swiftly denied the allegation by responding with their own statement. As tensions rose, Isak was separated from the first team, missed the Magpies’ league opener, and will also be absent when they face Liverpool on Monday night.

A standoff with no clear end in sight
Howe confessed that he remains uncertain about what lies ahead before the transfer window closes on 1 September. While the striker trains away from the squad, the manager admitted he has only spoken to him briefly and acknowledged the situation is “far from ideal.”

Despite the conflict, Howe expressed hope for eventual reconciliation. He emphasised that he would welcome Isak back if no transfer materialises.
However, Newcastle’s transfer frustrations complicate the matter further. The club have failed to land several targets, including Hugo Ekitike, Benjamin Sesko, and Joao Pedro.
Their £40m bid for Brentford forward Yoane Wissa was rejected. Meanwhile, Wolves have made it clear that Jorgen Stand Larsen is not for sale. With few striking options available, losing Isak would deal a heavy blow.
Fans divided but squad still supportive
Although Newcastle supporters voiced their displeasure with chants against Isak at Aston Villa, Howe insisted his team-mates remain supportive. According to him, Isak is not only a top-class striker but also a well-liked figure within the dressing room.
Yet, the key question lingers: would Isak commit to Newcastle if his Liverpool move falls through?
Just days ago, the Swede declared that “the relationship can’t continue.” This has cast doubt over his willingness to reintegrate. As the transfer deadline looms, time is running out for both player and club to resolve an increasingly complicated standoff.
