Liverpool have definitively closed the door on Cody Gakpo’s departure, rejecting an £85 million bid from Manchester City on the final day of the summer transfer window.
The decision was driven by the club’s inability to secure a suitable replacement before Tuesday’s deadline. Gakpo has accepted the decision and is prepared to continue his journey with the Reds.
City’s formal proposal, consisting of £75 million up front with a further £5 million in add-ons, was firmly rejected by Liverpool. The Athletic’s David Ornstein confirmed the move is now off, with direct communication between all sides confirming the pursuit has ended. Despite Gakpo having been keen on the move to the Etihad, Liverpool’s stance was resolute.
Head coach Andoni Iraola’s decision to prioritise squad strength over financial gain reflects the club’s confidence in the Dutch international’s value. Captain Virgil van Dijk had publicly urged the club to keep his teammate.
