Gen Z Baddie: Why every modern woman wants to identify as one

The term ‘Gen Z Baddie’ was popularized by Big Brother Naija Allstars winner, Ilebaye Odiniya.

In October 2023, Ilebaye became only the second woman in the history of the Big Brother Naija competition to emerge victorious. She was dubbed the resident ‘Gen Z Baddie’ after she won the competition.

The term ‘Gen Z Baddie’ has become a mainstay on social media, especially among Twitter users. Also, several young women on apps such as TikTok, and SnapChat have identified as Baddie.

In this article, we will be reviewing why the term ‘Baddie’ has become prominent in recent times. Asides from Ilebaye, notable Nigerian artistes such as Ayra Starr, Fave, and Tems have also been identified as ‘Gen Z Baddies’.

The Collins Dictionary defines Generation Z as “members of the generation of people born between the mid-1990s and mid-2010s. The Oxford Dictionaries defines Generation Z as “the group of people who were born between the late 1990s and the early 2010s, who are regarded as being very familiar with the internet.”

In a 2022 report, the U.S. Census designates Generation Z as the youngest generation with adult members (born 1997 to 2013).

Who Is A Baddie?

Haven’t already established who belongs in the Gen Z era, it is only ideal we look at who a baddie is. A baddie is used to refer to a woman who is bougie and has an epicurean outlook to life.

According to Urban Dictionary, a report published in 2019, a baddie is a girl who is always slaying the game and always on fleek. A girl who is extremely put together and looks phenomenal even on her off days.

As at the time of this publication, it is important to note that the definition or origin of the term ‘baddie’ has not been affirmed. However, it has loosely been affiliated with someone who is sexually appealing and charming.

Why Does Every Modern Woman Want To Identify As A Baddie?

Simply put, being a baddie is what is in vogue. It’s the trending thing to do; due to the fear of missing out, numerous women have preferred to embody the ‘baddie’ energy.

The ‘Gen Z Baddie’ culture is spearheaded by superstars such as singer-songwriter, Ayra Starr and BBNaija Allstars winner, Ilebaye. Both women are beautiful and adorable, additionally, they have found means of being successful in their respective fields of interest.

It is only ideal for younger women to imitate whom they admire and would like to stroll their path. A baddie tends to be confident and unapologetic about their perspective on life, hence, becoming one is simply the most ideal thing to do.
