Players making their first appearance in the UEFA Champions League this season will wear a special ‘debut patch’ on their sleeves.
The initiative, part of a new agreement between UEFA and Fanatics, will see the patch removed after the match and turned into a signed, one-of-a-kind trading card. The programme is set to expand to the Women’s Champions League from the 2027/28 season.
The patch features the word “debut” incorporated into the competition’s iconic starball logo. It will be worn by any player who makes their first appearance in Europe’s premier club competition, whether they start or come off the bench.
Players named in a matchday squad who remain unused substitutes will have to wait until they actually feature in a game.
After the match, the patch will be removed from the jersey, signed by the player and sent to Topps, the trading card company owned by Fanatics. It will then be incorporated into a unique, player-signed trading card, with the patches authenticated before the cards are released.

The initiative is part of a broader expansion of Fanatics’ debut-patch programme, which originated in Major League Baseball before spreading to the NFL, NBA, Bundesliga, Formula 1 and other major sports.
The financial stakes are important. A rookie debut patch card signed by 2025 NBA No.1 pick Cooper Flagg is projected to fetch an estimated $5 million (£3.7m) when it goes to auction next week. In March 2025, a debut-patch card belonging to Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes sold publicly for $1.1 million.
Several high-profile stars are set to make their Champions League debuts this season and could be among the first recipients. Real Madrid’s new signing Yan Diomande, who joined from RB Leipzig in a reported €140 million deal, is one player in line.
Manchester United’s Carlos Baleba and Liverpool duo Jérémy Jacquet and Víctor Muñoz could also qualify if they make their first appearances.
The introduction of the debut patch coincides with a six-year extension of UEFA’s existing partnership with Fanatics, which will now run until 2033. The deal covers the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Women’s Champions League, Europa League, Conference League, Super Cup and Youth League.
