Fifa president Gianni Infantino has ended speculation over Iran’s World Cup status with a firm declaration that the Asian side will compete as planned.
Infantino also stated that Iran will take part in the World Cup and their games will be played in the United States as scheduled. There has been ongoing uncertainty over their participation in the tournament because of the US-Israel war with Iran.
Earlier, Iran’s football federation explored relocating matches to Mexico. However, Fifa has dismissed any such possibility.
“Iran will be at the World Cup,” Infantino told AFP. “We’re delighted because they’re a very, very strong team, I’m very happy.
“The matches will be played where they are supposed to be, according to the draw,” the Fifa President added.
Iran are due to face New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles on 15 and 21 June respectively. They will also meet Egypt in Seattle on 26 June.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum had offered contingency support if relocation became necessary. Yet, Fifa insists existing plans remain intact.
“I’ve seen the team, I’ve spoken to the players and the coach, so everything is fine,” Infantino added. Meanwhile, Iran players held photos of children killed in war before a recent friendly.

Mehdi Mohammad Nabi stressed compliance with governing rules: “For us, what matters most are Fifa’s rules and regulations. We will comply with whatever Fifa decides.”
Global tensions had cast doubt over participation. Still, Infantino’s presence at Iran’s match signaled strong backing. He said: “Given our history in this competition, it is only natural that Fifa should support the Iranian team.”
The tournament begins on 11 June across three host nations. Confidence now grows that disruptions will not derail Iran’s campaign.
