Kun Khalifat FC have announced their withdrawal from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). The decision follows disciplinary action taken by the league body.
The Owerri-based club failed to honour their NPFL matchday 24 fixture against El-Kanemi Warriors in Maiduguri. Consequently, the league ruled the absence a breach of its framework and regulations.
NPFL officials acted swiftly in response to the incident, as sanctions were imposed in line with league statutes.
Kun Khalifat were handed a three-point and three-goal forfeiture, awarded to El-Kanemi Warriors. Additionally, a ₦10 million fine was imposed, although suspended for the rest of the season.
The punishment sparked an immediate reaction from the club’s hierarchy, as they strongly rejected both the verdict and the process behind it.
Describing the sanctions as “outrageous and disproportionate,” Kun Khalifat insisted valid reasons were submitted for missing the fixture. However, those explanations were rejected by league authorities.

Club cite fairness concerns in decision to quit NPFL
In a strongly worded statement, the club criticised the league’s leadership, claiming punishment had been prioritised over understanding and welfare.
“The punishment handed down to us is not only unacceptable but a clear indication that the league’s management is more interested in penalising clubs,” the statement read. The club also questioned the league’s commitment to development.
They added, “We cannot continue to be part of a system that disregards the well-being of its member clubs.” As a result, they confirmed their decision to exit the competition.
Kun Khalifat gained promotion to the NPFL from the Nigeria National League (NNL) last season. Their withdrawal now raises fresh concerns about governance and stability within the league.
The NPFL is yet to announce further steps as attention now turns to how the league will address the fallout.
