The Kwara State Government has awarded contracts worth N5 billion to upgrade 70 Primary Health Care (PHC) facilities across its three senatorial districts, elevating them to Level 2 PHCs.
Speaking at the contract signing event, the Secretary of the Kwara State Primary Health Care Development Agency (KWSPHCDA), Professor Nusirat Elelu, highlighted that the project will cover infrastructural upgrades, solar power installation, staff quarters, potable water supply, and modern medical equipment for the benefitting PHC centers.
The intervention, backed by the World Bank-supported Immunisation Plus and Malaria Progress by Accelerating Progress and Transforming Services (IMPACT) Project, aims to strengthen primary healthcare delivery across the state.
“This initiative will enhance the capacity of PHCs to provide quality healthcare services, ensuring that these facilities are ‘fit for purpose’ as the first point of contact in the national health system,” Elelu stated.
She urged contractors to adhere to quality standards and warned that any firm found negligent would face immediate contract termination.
She also assured that rigorous supervision would be in place to ensure the funds are used effectively.

Elelu further noted that 53 PHCs had previously been renovated, with nine more currently under rehabilitation, reaffirming the commitment of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s administration to revitalizing primary healthcare in the state.
She also recalled the recent recruitment of 1,005 PHC workers, including doctors, to strengthen the sector.
Speaking at the event, Michael Oguntoye, the IMPACT Programme Manager, disclosed that the project must be completed within three months and warned against any delay.
He emphasised that the upgrade is part of a broader initiative to reduce maternal and child mortality while improving access to essential healthcare services for women and children.
He further stated that the IMPACT project would also enhance national monitoring and evaluation systems, drive demand for quality healthcare services, and strengthen service delivery nationwide.
The contract signing event was attended by successful bidders, members of the Project Implementation Unit of the IMPACT project, state health officials, and media representatives.
