Lack of electricity in Nigeria affected my childhood, family business – Ayra Starr

Nigerian Afrobeats star Ayra Starr has opened up about how poor electricity supply in Nigeria affected her childhood and family life.

Speaking at the Global Citizen NOW in New York, the singer said growing up without stable electricity shaped many parts of her life and forced her family to struggle through difficult conditions.

According to her, the lack of a reliable power supply affected her education, personal development, and even her familyโ€™s source of income while growing up.

She said, โ€œEvery Nigerian child has faced some type of electricity issues. My grandma used to sell tomatoes and pepper and I used to assist her. We had to sell it quickly because we didnโ€™t have electricity to store them.

โ€œThe harsh experience made me who I am today. Because I to find ways to do what I had to do without the comfort of electricity.

โ€œGrowing up, having electricity would have made a big difference. If I came back from school and I had AC or even a fan in the heat while doing my assignments, that would have made a big difference.โ€

The singer also called on African leaders to prioritise solving the continentโ€™s electricity problems, stressing that children deserve access to electricity and other essential social amenities needed for proper growth and development.
