The Lagos State Government has confirmed the return of the much-loved Lagos Fanti Carnival, set to take place on Easter Monday, 6 April 2026, at the historic Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS).

Announcing the event at a press conference held on Tuesday at Eleganza House, the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, described the carnival as a “living expression” of Lagos’ rich Afro-Brazilian heritage.

With a legacy spanning over 130 years, the Fanti Carnival traces its origins to the 19th century, when formerly enslaved Brazilians returned to Lagos and settled within the coastal communities.

Remi Da Costa, General Secretary of the Brazilian Descendants Association, explained that the name “Fanti” is derived from the Portuguese word Fantasia, meaning fantasy.

Over the years, the carnival has evolved into a vibrant cultural showcase, featuring intricately designed costumes that fuse tradition with modern creativity, lively brass band performances influenced by samba and highlife and culinary displays highlighting the shared food heritage between Lagos and Brazil.

Mrs Benson-Awoyinka noted that beyond its cultural significance, the carnival plays an important role in driving economic activity across the state.

Drawing parallels with the success of the Eyo Festival, she said the event is expected to support local businesses, create opportunities for young creatives, and strengthen Lagos’ reputation as a leading cultural and tourism hub in Africa.

She added that events of this scale also promote social cohesion while projecting the state’s cultural identity to a global audience.

Project Manager Bolaji Animashaun revealed that organisers are expecting over 40,000 attendees this year.

To ensure a smooth and safe experience, a multi-agency team — including the police, LASTMA, LAWMA and the Lagos State Ambulance Service — has been deployed to manage traffic, sanitation and emergency response.

Highlights of the 2026 edition include prize awards for “Best Dressed” and “Best Performing Community”, performances by seven major cultural groups, including Isale-Eko Woro, Brazilian Campos Carreta, Okoo-Faji, Lafiaji Fanti, Epetedo United Youth, Olowogbowo Fancy, and Okepopo Fanti and the Afro-Brazilian Economic and Cultural Exchange Summit, aimed at strengthening tourism and investment ties between Nigeria and Brazil.

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Arts Theatre, Tola Akerele, commended participating communities for their dedication to preserving the carnival’s legacy through elaborate costumes, floats and performances.

She noted that the event continues to serve as an important platform for cultural expression, community pride and national identity.
