The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to sports development, signalling particular interest in promoting fencing within the state’s school system.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, speaking through his Deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, during the week, emphasised sports’ crucial role in engaging youth and fostering national growth.

The reaffirmation came during a courtesy visit by Gulnora Saidova, Secretary-General of the International Fencing Federation (FIE), at the Deputy Governor’s Ikoyi residence.

Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted that sports are vital for human health and contribute to the holistic development of individuals and the nation, advocating for participation across all age groups.

He articulated the state government’s dedication to backing the integration and expansion of fencing in Lagos schools.

“We believe that sport is something all our young people should be engaged in,” the governor stated, drawing a parallel to the mandatory sports engagement prevalent during his own secondary school years.

Furthermore, he observed Africa’s significant progress in fencing, particularly in Nigeria, which indicates the continent’s burgeoning interest and potential in the sport.

Sanwo-Olu stressed that fencing, often perceived as an exclusive activity, deserves broader recognition and participation, akin to other popular sports.

Earlier, FIE Secretary-General Gulnora Saidova urged the state government to officially elevate fencing as a priority sport, especially in Lagos, asserting its potential to contribute to the state’s overall development and its youth.

“I see the great potential you have here and the talented athletes,” said Saidova, noting fencing’s Olympic status as a “tremendous opportunity for Nigeria to grow its presence in future Olympics.”

She specifically requested formal recognition for the sport in Lagos.

Saidova also sought government support for hosting an international fencing competition in Nigeria, outlining the federation’s ambition to position Nigeria as a leader in African fencing development, which could yield substantial economic and sustainability benefits for the nation.

Adeyinka Samuel, President of the Nigeria Fencing Federation, provided insights into the sport, describing it as a combat discipline centred on sword fighting that enhances mental and physical faculties.

Samuel pointed out that fencing has provided many athletes with global travel opportunities for competitions, securing numerous medals for their respective countries and teams.

He also mentioned that the ongoing African Fencing Championship in Nigeria is currently attracting participants from around the world.
