Renowned Nigerian gospel artist, Israel Terhemba Ikyereve, popularly known as New Jerusalem, has passed away at the age of 53.
His death has triggered a wave of grief across Benue State, particularly among the Christian faithful who admired his unique ability to use Tiv Swange music as a tool for evangelism.
Leading a condolence delegation to the late singer’s residence in Makurdi, former Benue State Governor, Chief Samuel Ortom, paid glowing tribute to Ikyereve. Joined by members of the Brethren Prayer Group, Ortom praised the late musician as a committed believer whose music reached far beyond Nigeria’s shores.
“His songs touched my heart as a lover of Christ,” Ortom said. “That attraction led me to seek a personal relationship with him, which began a lasting bond with his family.”

Recalling an encounter during an international event in Australia, Ortom noted that a Tiv music teacher had been playing New Jerusalem’s songs in the background — a moment he said exemplified the global influence of the singer’s gospel mission.
The former governor also prayed for the family and assured them of his continued support, including to the New Jerusalem Gospel Music Troupe. He emphasized that his commitment would not end after the funeral.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Hon. Iorshagher Ikyereve, the deceased’s elder brother, expressed deep appreciation for Ortom’s steadfast support throughout the singer’s illness and afterwards. He further revealed that one of the late musician’s sons was named “Ortom” in recognition of the former governor’s compassionate role in their lives.
Prayers at the condolence gathering were led by Rev. Pastor Tor Ujah and Dr. Joseph Antyo, both key figures in the Brethren Prayer Group.
New Jerusalem is survived by his wife, gospel singer Deborah Msendoo Ikyereve, four children, and numerous relatives.
He will be laid to rest on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at Sati Agirigi, Mbamo, Shitile, located in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.
