After nearly two decades of professional football, Adam Lallana has called time on his illustrious playing career.
The 37-year-old former England international confirmed his retirement with a heartfelt message, expressing gratitude for a journey that began and fittingly ended at Southampton.
Although he only made five starts for Southampton during the 2023/24 season, Lallana’s return to St Mary’s was about more than minutes on the pitch. Despite the club’s relegation to the Championship, he served in a dual capacity. He contributed behind the scenes as a coach – a role he will continue under newly appointed manager Will Still.

Lallana’s journey through football began in the very heart of Southampton’s youth academy. Having made his first-team debut as an 18-year-old in 2006, he would go on to become a vital figure in the club’s rise through the divisions. His leadership was instrumental during back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League. It was a feat that firmly established him as a club legend.

In 2014, Lallana took a major leap when he joined Liverpool for £25 million. It was in the same summer he represented England at the World Cup in Brazil. His move to Anfield marked a new chapter, one filled with silverware and global acclaim. Notably, he played a key role in Liverpool’s Champions League triumph in 2019 and their long-awaited Premier League title win in 2020.
Following his spell with the Reds, Lallana spent three solid seasons at Brighton. But it was the emotional pull of home that led him back to Southampton, where he embraced his final months as both mentor and player.
Reflecting on his career, Lallana described his journey as one filled with both joy and hardship. Nevertheless, he expressed no regrets, stating that every high and low helped shape him. “I’m proud of the playing career I’ve had,” he shared, emphasizing the deep appreciation he holds for everyone who stood by him – from coaches and teammates to supporters.
Moreover, Lallana extended heartfelt thanks to his family. The veteran reserved special praise for his wife, children, parents, and sister. He acknowledged their unwavering support throughout the ups and downs of his football life. Their presence, he noted, was his true foundation.
