Nigeria’s quest for continental glory is now in motion following the inclusion of four emerging talents in Coach Eric Chelle’s 28-man final squad for the 35th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Their selection, however, has been met with mixed reactions amongst fans and analysts alike. Of the four new faces, the most exciting prospect who has caught the eye of all and sundry is Pisa SC midfielder (on loan from Serie A giants Inter Milan) Ebenezer Akinsanmiro. Other new invitees are Tochukwu Nnadi, Ryan Alebiosu, and Salim Fago Lawal.
Each of these players brings a unique profile that strengthens key areas, and together they represent the new heartbeat of the refreshed Super Eagles side AFCON 2025 squad.
1. Salim Fago Lawal
Salim Fago Lawal is an intriguing addition. The 22-year-old striker, who developed at Mavlon FC, continues to grow rapidly in Croatia with NK Istra 1961.
He has scored six goals in 18 matches this season, and his sharp movement creates constant problems for defenders. Moreover, his ability to play across the frontline gives Chelle multiple tactical options in high-pressure moments.
Fago’s biggest assets remain his pace and aggression, which often tilt duels in his favour. Many remember his energetic displays at the 2023 U20 World Cup, where he scored once in five matches under Ladan Bosso.

His hunger, however, has intensified since then, and his form suggests he is ready for a senior breakthrough. However, many have questioned his addition to the Nigerian squad ahead of the continental showpiece with the more prolific Rafiu Durosinmi, who plays for Viktoria Plzeň uninvited.

2. Ebenezer Akinsanmiro
Ebenezer Akinsanmiro adds a different dimension entirely. Strong, tireless, and technically polished, the Inter Milan midfielder embodies the modern box-to-box profile. His ball-carrying is smooth, his tackling is assertive, and his long-range passing opens up transitions with precision.
Importantly, he can operate in any midfield role due to his versatility, although his best work emerges when he drives from deep positions.
His press resistance and intelligence under pressure bring calmness to chaotic moments. Analysts describe him as a breakthrough star whose creativity and work rate can transform Nigeria’s midfield. With his ability to shoot from distance and burst into opposing boxes, Akinsanmiro offers end-to-end value that few young players match.
3. Ryan Alebiosu
Meanwhile, Ryan Alebiosu provides an exciting option on the right side of defence. The 23-year-old Blackburn Rovers full-back has impressed in the Championship with his athleticism, accuracy, and timing.
An Arsenal academy product, Alebiosu chose Nigeria over England despite being born in London, and his commitment arrives at the perfect moment. His overlapping runs and crisp deliveries add attacking depth, while his stamina ensures defensive consistency.
4. Tochukwu Nnadi
Completing the group is Tochukwu Nnadi, who continues to grow steadily in Belgium with Zulte Waregem. The midfielder has maintained an 85% pass accuracy across 15 appearances.
Scouts praise his relentlessness, recovery pace, and physical readiness for elite football. Because he reads danger early and distributes efficiently, Nnadi strengthens Nigeria’s long-term defensive midfield plans.
Nnadi’s valuation near £3.5m and he has already attracted Premier League interest, however his immediate focus remains AFCON. His presence gives Chelle stability and positional discipline, particularly in games that require tactical balance.
