Jose Mourinho has officially left his role as Fenerbahce head coach after just over a year in charge of the Turkish giants.
The Portuguese tactician’s departure comes only two days after the club crashed out of the Champions League play-offs to Benfica, a defeat that proved the final straw.
In a brief statement, Fenerbahce confirmed Mourinho had “parted ways” with the club, thanking the 62-year-old for his efforts. However, his short spell in Istanbul will be remembered as much for controversy as for football.
Controversy and friction mark Mourinho’s time in Turkey
Although Mourinho guided Fenerbahce to second place in the Turkish Super Lig, his tenure was turbulent.

In February, fierce rivals Galatasaray accused him of making racist remarks after a heated 0-0 draw. They vowed to initiate legal action, while Mourinho flatly denied the allegations and countered with a lawsuit seeking damages of 1,907,000 Turkish Lira (£41,000).
Moreover, he repeatedly clashed with referees and the Turkish football establishment. His outspoken criticism earned him a four-match ban, later reduced to two, after blasting officials during another heated clash with Galatasaray. These incidents, combined with the Champions League disappointment, heightened pressure on the veteran coach.
Mourinho’s future: A new challenge awaits?
Mourinho also hinted at his restlessness while still in Turkey. After being sent off during a Europa League clash with Manchester United in October, he jokingly claimed he wanted to manage “a team at the bottom of the table in England” so he could avoid the burden of European competition.
His exit from Fenerbahce adds another chapter to a storied managerial career. From three Premier League titles with Chelsea to Champions League triumphs at Porto and Inter Milan, Mourinho’s legacy is undisputed.
More recently, he delivered Roma their first European trophy with the 2022 Conference League title. He also remains the last manager to guide Manchester United to continental success, lifting the Europa League in 2017.
As speculation grows over his next destination, one thing remains clear: wherever Jose Mourinho goes next, the spotlight – and the drama – will surely follow.
