NAFDAC: Nigerians livid after realizing most products in their homes are fake (PHOTOS)

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is a Nigerian federal agency under the Federal Ministry of Health that is responsible for regulating and controlling the manufacture, importation, exportation, advertisement, distribution, sale, and use of food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, chemicals, and packaged water.

Nigerians have taken to the microblogging site, X (formerly known as Twitter) to express their shock and infuriation after coming to the realization that most products they acquire in various market places are counterfeit.

On the trending topic of the production of counterfeit products such as alcohol, soft drinks and other edible content, netizens have called upon the regulatory bodies and the government to do the needful by apprehending heinous businessmen and producers to face the wrath of the law.

During the early hours of Monday, personnel of regulatory body, NAFDAC were able to apprehend some culprits and perpetrators in Abia state.

The Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, said the agency intercepted counterfeiters involved in the production of a variety of fake beverages including wines, soft drinks, and other products in the Eziukwu market in Aba, Abia state.

Prof Adeyeye who said this at a virtual media parley in Abuja on Monday disclosed that the street value of the confiscated and destroyed fake products is estimated at over N750,000,000.

Adeyeye said the activity was carried out with other security agencies following an intelligent tip-off.

She said some of the nefarious activities of the counterfeiters included the manufacturing of all kinds of adulterated products, especially different kinds of wine from a wide variety of brands ranging from Seaman Schnapps, Henessy, Four Cousins, Carlo Rossi, Jenney, Chelsea London Dry Gin, Schnapp Dry Gin, McDowells, Black Labels, Gordons, Martell, Campari, Smirnoff ice, Eva non-alcoholic drink, Evra non-alcoholic drink, Cartel, among others.
