The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has taken down the streaming platform moviebox.ng for allegedly distributing pirated content.
This action was carried out on July 20, 2025, with support from the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA).
The website had been offering free access to films, music, and live sports from Nigeria and other countries without proper licenses.

According to the Commission, the platform used multiple mirror sites and fallback domains to avoid being traced or removed, a method often linked to organized piracy networks.
A recent review by the NCC revealed that moviebox.ng had been operating in a way that encouraged copyright violations while also posing risks to users.
Apart from breaking the law, the platform exposed users to scams, identity theft, and harmful software that could damage their devices or steal private information.
Authorities have begun efforts to shut down any other mirror sites linked to the platform.
NCC also reminded the public to avoid websites that promise free downloads and streaming, warning that such sites are often dangerous and illegal.
Industry groups in the film, music, and broadcast sectors have welcomed the suspension, calling it a step forward in protecting creative work.
This development follows the NCC’s broader campaign launched earlier this year known as “Stand Together Against Online Piracy (STOP),” aimed at bringing stakeholders together to fight piracy and support Nigeria’s digital growth.
