NiMet forecasts 3-day nationwide thunderstorms

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted heavy thunderstorms and rains nationwide for three days starting Monday, August 4, 2025.

A weather advisory issued by NiMet warns of strong winds, potential flash floods, and visibility reduction across multiple states in the country. Travelers were advised to exercise caution due to expected weather-related disruptions across major routes and affected regions.

According to NiMet, affected states include Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Abuja, Kaduna, Plateau, and parts of the North Central region.

In its statement, NiMet said, “Thunderstorms are expected in several locations, accompanied by strong winds and heavy rainfall within the forecast period.”

The forecast emphasized the need for preparedness by emergency services, local governments, and residents in vulnerable areas likely to experience flash floods.

Additionally, aviation operators were advised to monitor updates as the strong winds and rain could cause turbulence and delay flights in certain areas.

The agency further urged construction workers, farmers, and road users to take precautionary measures against potential lightning strikes and flooding.

NiMet stated that water levels in already saturated areas could rise further, creating risks to property, roads, and farmlands.

Meanwhile, local governments encouraged proactive clearing of drainage channels and enforcement of safety measures in flood-prone areas before rainfall begins.

Despite the warnings, NiMet assured close monitoring of the situation and promised timely updates through official communication channels.

The public was urged to rely only on official weather alerts and avoid acting on unverified or unofficial forecasts from social media.

Authorities in affected states were directed to mobilize resources, manage disruptions, and enforce safety protocols throughout the forecast period.

The meteorological agency emphasized that proactive measures would mitigate the expected impact of the adverse weather on lives and property.

NiMet issued this advisory as part of its routine update to minimize damage and raise public awareness during intensified seasonal rainfall.
