Veteran Nigerian actor Francis Odega has expressed concern over what he describes as a steady decline in the standard of Nollywood productions.

Odega made the remarks during a recent episode of the ‘Where Is The Lie’ podcast, where he compared the film industry of his early career with its current state.

According to him, the Nollywood of the past produced more memorable and impactful movies than what is being churned out today.

Reflecting on his active years in the industry, the actor said films produced during that era were often unforgettable, unlike many recent releases which, in his view, fall short of expectations.

“Back then, one script would give us one unforgettable movie. But now, one script can give you seven bad movies, and that’s not right. Nollywood back then, is far better than the Nollywood of today,” the actor said.

Odega further emphasized his longstanding involvement in the industry, noting that he was part of its formative years before it evolved into a global brand.

“I was among of the people who made Nollywood. When we started, Nollywood was just a phenomenon. Our organisation used to be called Nigerian Actors Guild, NAG, before we later changed it to Actors’ Guild Of Nigeria, AGN.

“It was after then that Nollywood came. So, I am one of the pioneers of Nollywood. I have been in the movie industry for 30 years,” he explained.

The actor maintained that his experience spanning three decades gives him a clear perspective on how the industry has changed over time.
