Key Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders from Nigeria’s northern region have thrown their support behind Kabiru Turaki, a former Minister of Special Duties, to emerge as the consensus candidate for the party’s upcoming National Chairman position.

PDP in a statement posted on its X page on Thursday said the endorsement aims to streamline the selection process ahead of the PDP’s national elective convention scheduled for Ibadan, Oyo State.

The resolution was solidified following a private gathering of major northern stakeholders in Abuja on Wednesday.

Adamawa State Governor, Umar Fintiri, confirmed the decision to reporters after the meeting, although he clarified that the consensus agreement does not preclude other interested aspirants from running for the office.

The influential group that reached this decision included the governors of Adamawa, Bauchi (Bala Mohammed, who is also the PDP Governors’ Forum Chairman), Zamfara (Dauda Lawal), and Plateau (Caleb Mutfwang).

Also in attendance were prominent figures like former Senate President Bukola Saraki, Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro, the current PDP National Chairman Umar Damagum, and other senior party officials from the North.

The stakeholder meeting took place at the Abuja residence of former Kaduna State Governor, Senator Ahmed Makarfi.

Makarfi himself was previously in the running for the party’s top job, along with other notable northern figures like former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido.

The PDP’s national elective convention is slated for November 15 and 16 this year.

During this event, new members of the National Working Committee will be elected to steer the party’s affairs in preparation for the 2027 general elections and beyond.
