Politics: Tinubu justifies fuel subsidy removal, insists reforms are essential

NRTC WEEKLY learnt that President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday reaffirmed that ending the fuel subsidy was a tough but unavoidable step to rescue Nigeria’s economy and ensure resources benefit the majority of citizens.

In his Independence Day broadcast marking Nigeria’s 65th anniversary, the President said his administration inherited a fragile economy and had to choose between “business as usual” or fundamental reforms.

Leading Stories: Arise TV presenter Somtochukwu Maduagwu killed in Abuja robbery

NRTC WEEKLY gathered that Arise TV confirmed the death of its anchor, reporter and producer, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who was killed during an armed robbery at her residence in Katampe, Abuja, on Monday, September 29, 2025.

Maduagwu, 29, popularly known as Sommie, was attacked in the early hours of the morning in an incident now under investigation by the Nigeria Police.

Arise TV described her as more than a colleague, highlighting her energy, professionalism, and ability to connect with viewers.

Economy: FG begins payment of N32,000 pension increment to retirees – PTAD

NRTC WEEKLY reported that the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) has started the implementation of new pension increments for retirees under the Defined Benefit Scheme, with payments reflected in the September 2025 payroll.

According to PTAD, the package includes a fixed N32,000 increase and percentage adjustments of 10.66 percent and 12.95 percent for eligible categories. About 832,000 pensioners will benefit from the adjustment.

The approval follows President Bola Tinubu’s directive in August after a request by PTAD’s Executive Secretary, Tolulope Odunaiya, for emergency budgetary support to implement pension reforms.

Sports: Nigeria’s Flying Eagles edge Saudi Arabia to boost FIFA U20 World Cup knockout hopes

NRTC WEEKLY learnt that the Flying Eagles of Nigeria secured a crucial 3-2 victory over Saudi Arabia on Friday morning to revive their Round of 16 prospects at the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile.

The dramatic encounter in Talca was packed with goals, momentum shifts, and a last-gasp winner.

Nigeria struck first through Nasiru Salihu, who calmly converted in the 10th minute to hand the West Africans an early lead. However, their advantage lasted barely 11 minutes as Amar Alyuhaybi equalised for Saudi Arabia, punishing a lapse in concentration.

Entertainment: Faith disqualified from BBNaija season 10 after fight with Sultana

NRTC WEEKLY learnt that Big Brother Naija removed housemate Faith from the season 10 reality show after a clash with fellow contestant Sultana turned physical.

The decision was taken during an emergency gathering in the main lounge where Biggie informed the housemates about the disqualification and ordered Faith to leave the house without delay.

The incident followed a heated disagreement that escalated into a fight, leaving Sultana injured.
