Ondo State has commenced a comprehensive two-day induction and orientation programme for more than 2,000 newly recruited teachers, who are set to be deployed to both primary and secondary schools across the state.

The programme, which began on Monday, is being conducted simultaneously in six different centres throughout the state.

During the flag-off ceremony in Akure, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, represented by his Deputy, Olayide Adelami, underscored the pivotal role educators play in elevating the standard of education.

He made it clear that the appointments were specifically designed to fill existing vacancies in the state’s rural communities, ensuring that all students, regardless of their geographical location, have access to quality learning.

The governor issued a stern directive, stating that any new teacher declining a posting to their assigned rural area would have their appointment revoked.

Aiyedatiwa highlighted several key achievements of his administration over the past year in the education sector.

These accomplishments include the construction and refurbishment of 121 classroom blocks, the acquisition of nearly 10,000 furniture items for students and teachers, and ongoing infrastructural upgrades and expansions in secondary schools and technical colleges.

He urged the newly inducted teachers to fully commit to the training program, emphasising its importance in preparing them for their responsibilities.

The governor also warned of stringent monitoring measures to ensure regular attendance and effective teaching.

“We have emplaced several monitoring teams that will go round the schools to monitor your regular attendance at classes and your output in the days ahead. So you must roll up your sleeves to contribute your quota to the state through quality education,” the governor advised.

Victor Olabimtan, Chairman of the Ondo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), reflected on the recruitment process that led to the selection of the new teachers.

He commended Aiyedatiwa for his significant investment in education, while also advocating for continued support until the UNESCO-recommended teacher-to-student ratio of 1:25 is achieved.

Speaking on behalf of his fellow new recruits, Akinwale Akinnagbe expressed gratitude to the governor, affirming that the induction program would be invaluable in equipping them to deliver high-quality instruction in their respective schools.

The induction programme is currently running across six centres: Akure, Ikare-Akoko, Ondo, Owo, Okitipupa, and Irele.
