Manchester United’s Patrick Dorgu is likely to be sidelined for weeks after injuring his hamstring at Arsenal. The setback followed United’s dramatic 3-2 Premier League victory on Sunday.
The 21-year-old had earlier lashed in United’s second goal from the edge of the box. However, he limped off late with what was initially hoped to be cramp.
Interim head coach Michael Carrick feared a minor issue at first. Yet sources suggest the injury is more significant than initially believed.
Dorgu is still undergoing assessment, with no clear return date confirmed. As a result, United now face an unexpected test of squad depth.
The Denmark international joined United from Lecce 12 months ago. Since then, his trajectory has shifted dramatically under Carrick.
Previously used as a wing-back, Dorgu has thrived in an advanced left-sided attacking role. He also scored in the previous victory over Manchester City.
United have eight league games remaining before the March international break and Dorgu is expected to feature for Denmark in World Cup play-offs then.
His likely absence opens the door for tactical reshuffling. One obvious beneficiary could be Matheus Cunha. Cunha started United’s last two games from the bench. He came on to score the decisive winner against Arsenal.

Dorgu’s injury represents the first real concern during Carrick’s early tenure. Until now, momentum had built steadily and convincingly.

Breakthrough halted as momentum meets misfortune
Dorgu struggled initially after his £25m move from Lecce in February 2025 as opportunities were limited under former boss Ruben Amorim.
That changed following Amorim’s dismissal and Carrick’s appointment. Suddenly, Dorgu moved from the margins into the spotlight. The 21-year-old played key roles in consecutive statement wins. Those victories came against Manchester City and Premier League leaders Arsenal.
He scored in both matches, including a spectacular 25-yard strike at Emirates Stadium. United’s transformation has been closely tied to his resurgence.
Also, it cannot be denied that Carrick’s use of Dorgu in advanced areas unlocked his attacking instincts. Confidence and freedom replaced uncertainty and caution.
Now, both player and coach face an enforced pause. It comes just as belief and rhythm were aligning perfectly.
Dorgu will be forced to watch from the sidelines and that proves to be a cruel interruption at a defining moment. However, United’s staff remain hopeful the damage is manageable.
