Manchester United’s season plunged deeper into crisis after a stunning Carabao Cup elimination to League Two side Grimsby Town on Wednesday night.
The Red Devils were knocked out 12-11 on penalties after a dramatic 2-2 draw, leaving manager Ruben Amorim to apologise to fans for what he admitted was a humiliating performance.
United found themselves trailing 2-0 inside the opening half-hour, with Grimsby seizing every opportunity to punish sloppy defending.
Although Bryan Mbeumo halved the deficit before Harry Maguire struck a late equaliser, the Premier League outfit never truly imposed themselves on the contest.

The match headed into a marathon penalty shootout after both sides failed to find a winner in extra time. Matheus Cunha, United’s big summer signing, missed a decisive spot-kick in the initial round of five. He squandered the chance to seal progress.
What followed was a nerve-racking sequence as every player converted until Mbeumo rattled the crossbar, ensuring United’s elimination. The loss not only ended their Carabao Cup campaign prematurely but also further showcased the fragility within Amorim’s squad.
Amorim under pressure after series of poor results
Coming after a defeat to Arsenal and a disappointing draw against Fulham, the latest setback has sparked louder questions about Amorim’s ability to turn the tide. The Portuguese manager admitted the performance reflected a lack of intensity and direction.
“I just want to apologise to our fans. The way we started the game, without any fight, was unacceptable,” he confessed. He further suggested that “something has to change” within the squad, pointing out that it was impossible to replace 22 players again.
With the season still in its infancy but pressure already mounting, Amorim’s future at Old Trafford appears uncertain. For now, United’s supporters are left to grapple with one of the most embarrassing results in recent club history.
