Nigeria romped into the quarter-finals of the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after dismantling Mozambique 4-0 in a ruthless display in Fes.
The Super Eagles started sharply and pressed bravely while their opponents looked overwhelmed and cautious.
Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman struck first with a composed finish that rewarded Nigeria’s control, and it instantly lifted confidence across the side. Soon afterwards, Victor Osimhen doubled the lead with a precise effort, and from that moment, Mozambique faced an uphill battle before halftime.
Although Mozambique searched for stability, Nigeria refused to slow down, as the attacking movement stayed slick and unforgiving. 2023 Africa Player of the Year Osimhen then produced another decisive moment immediately after the restart as he guided home from close range to tighten Nigeria’s grip.
Osimhen and Lookman kept stretching the defence, and at the other end Nigeria also defended with authority and calm organisation.
Osimhen brilliance and Lookman creativity drive Nigeria toward fourth AFCON title chase
As the match wore on, the three-time champions sensed vulnerability, and therefore continued to chase further goals. Akor Adams eventually added a powerful fourth, as he finished with a superb shot to seal a complete performance.
Furthermore Nigeria’s movement, energy, and clinical edge showed why the West Africans are serious title contenders, while their structure protected the clean sheet impressively.

In addition, the victory showcased depth across the squad, because every substitute contributed intensity and fresh urgency when required – Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Rapahel Onyedika came on to control things at the middle of the park and the latter almost found the back of the net.

Nigerian supporters must be pleased with the performance of the boys. Osimhen, Adams, and Lookman provided creativity, press and goals while Alex Iwobi (now dubbed “king of pre-assists”) dictated tempo and was a destructive force in midfield. Bruno Onyemaechi and Bright Osayi-Samuel were brilliant in the full-back positions while Semi Ajayi and Calvin Bassey shut out the Mozambicans brilliantly.
Kudos must be given to both Frank Onyeka and captain Wilfred Ndidi who provided energy and rigidity to the three-time continental champions. As the tournament progresses, the Super Eagles team continue to look mature, hungry, and united, and therefore expectations have now risen significantly across the nation Nigeria.
Additionally, their calm reaction under pressure shows readiness for tougher battles.
Attention now turns to the quarter-final in Marrakech on Saturday, where either Algeria or DR Congo will attempt to halt this confident charge.
